By Matt Stein: World Boxing Association light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (28-1, 27 KO’s) weighed in at 138.8 at Friday’s weigh-infor his fight against journeyman DeMarcus Corley (37-13-1, 22 KO’s) on Saturday night at the Estadio Luna Park, Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina.

Corley, 36, weighed 137.9. Maidana, 27, is looking to finally meet up with WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan later on this year in December. Maidana can really help himself if he looks impressive against Corley, because the last thing he needs is to struggle or get beaten with the Khan fight so near.

Maidana is one of the biggest punchers in the light welterweight division. What makes Maidana so hard to fight is the combination of power and pressure that he puts on his opponents. He never stops coming forward and loads up on everything he throws.

Unlike a lot of fighters, Maidana is able to generate a lot of power in close and that makes him very hard to deal with. His last opponent Victor Cayo tried to run from Maidana, but was cut off again and again and forced to slug with Maidana.

It’s difficult not to get in a war with Maidana, because he makes his opponents fight for their lives with his pressure. He’s very good at cutting off the ring and once he’s on top of an opponent, he is able to deliver some ferocious shots.

Corley was a big puncher in the early 2000s and was able to fight fights with Zab Judah, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Miguel Cotto, Devon Alexander, Junior Witter and Randall Bailey. Unfortunately, Corley lost all those fights but he did stun Cotto at one point in his 5h round knockout loss to him in 2005. Corley’s best wins of his career have come against Felix Flores, Ener Julio and Darryl Tyson.
