Should Adamek fight another big heavyweight before the Klitschkos? Maybe Dimitrenko

By Jim Dower: It’s been pretty much established already that Tomasz Adamek failed to make a case for himself as a worthy contender for one of the Klitschko brothers after Adamek went life and death with a washed up 38-year-old Michael Grant last Saturday night at the Prudential Center, in Newark, New Jersey. Adamek won the fight by a 12 round unanimous decision, which was a good thing. But what wasn’t good was the fact sight of Adamek getting hurt multiple times by Grant in the fight. If this was supposed to be a warm-up for the Klitschko brothers, then I think Adamek may need another warm-up bout against one more big heavyweight so that he show improvement and hopefully look good enough to where boxing fans will give him a chance to beat one of the Klitschko brothers.

Right now, no one outside of Adamek’s most loyal fans are crazy enough to give him any chance at beating the Klitschko brothers. As such, instead of moving forward into a fight that he has almost zero chance of winning against the Klitschkos, Adamek might want to look at taking on a similar sized heavyweight in 6’7″ Alexander Dimitrenko. If Adamek truly wants an opponent that has a style somewhat like the Klitschko brothers, then Dimitrenko is the man for Adamek. However, Adamek probably wouldn’t want to fight someone like Dimitrenko, because he’s definitely a step up from Grant in terms of boxing skills.

Dimitrenko may not have much of an inside game or a lot of power, but he does throw a lot more punches than Grant does, and he will use his jab much more than Grant. It’s another winnable fight for Adamek, because Dimitrenko showed how vulnerable he is in losing to Eddie Chambers last year by a 12 round majority decision in July 2009. Dimitrenko bounced back from that loss with an impressive 5th round stoppage victory in his last fight against Yaroslav Zavoritbyy in July of this year. However, Dimitrenko is still someone that Adamek can learn a lot from if he is able to get this fight and find ways of neutralizing Dimitrenko’s offensive weapons.
