Maidana looks awful in beating Corley – So will Khan fight Maidana now?

By William Mackay: If there ever was a time where I think WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan might choose to fight WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (29-1, 27 KO’s), I think this may be the occasion. Maidana fought and defeated former WBO light welterweight champion DeMarcus Corley (37-14-1, 22 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Estadio Luna Park, Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina. This was not a fight where Maidana looked good. Indeed, Maidana looked like the same fighter that was beaten by Andriy Kotelnik last year. In other words, Maidana looked terrible.

Basically, Maidana showed zero defense and was hit a lot by the 36-year-old Corley. I say this bout Corley: He may not have the best chin or the best defense, but he can still punch like a mule. I think he was hitting harder than Maidana tonight. The guy can flat out punch. It’s just too bad that he’s old now and his chin isn’t that great. Maidana had Corley in trouble in several rounds, hurting him in the 6th, putting him down on the canvas in the 7th and then hurting him again in the 9th.

But Corley did a good job of clinching when he was hurt and was able to escape some rough moments. But later on in the fight, after Maidana has shot all his fireworks, Corley took over and began to beat Maidana all around the ring. For all the Argentinian fans watching their hometown hero Maidana getting beaten, it had to have been an uncomfortable feeling. However, Maidana had built up enough of a lead to where Corley needed a knockout to get the win. He didn’t have enough fuel in the tank to take Maidana out, but he did give a good account of himself and make Maidana look bad.

But now that Maidana has been exposed again, will Khan finally fight him? God, I hope so. I don’t know what Khan could be waiting for if he doesn’t fight him now. This is the perfect cherry picking moment for Khan to scoop up what appears to be an easy win on paper for him. Khan needs to take the fight before someone else makes Maidana looks like hell and maybe beats him. But with that said, I don’t know that Khan could have taken any of the shots that Corley took tonight. I mean Corley took some god awful punishment for three or four rounds there and I just have my doubts whether Khan, even if running like a sprinter, would be able to handle some of the shots that Maidana landed against Corley. I just don’t think Khan’s chin was made to take the kinds of punches that Maidana was landing tonight. Forget about the outcome for a second. Maidana was hitting just as hard as he did in his fights against Victor Cayo and Victor Ortiz. But Corley showed a great chin tonight and a lot heart to keep fighting when he was getting ruined for a few rounds there.
