Image: Khan's win over Kotelnik now looking really impressive in light of Alexander's performance tonightBy Dan Ambrose: World Boxing Association (WBA) light welterweight champion Amir Khan’s one-sided 12 round unanimous decision win over Andriy Kotelnik last year is now looking more and more impressive after Kotelnik fought IBF/WBC junior welterweight champion Devon Alexander to a standstill on Saturday night at the Scottrade Center, in Saint Louis, Missouri. Alexander was out-landed by Kotelnik and landed the harder shots. However, Alexander threw more punches, but still ended up landing 20+ less shots compared to Kotelnik.

HBO analyst Harold Lederman had him on view of why he thought that Alexander won the fight, saying it was because was the busier fighter. And it’s true, Alexander did throw a lot more punches than Kotelnik, but he was missing those shots or having them blocked. In that case, Kotelnik should have been given the decision based on his better shots and more punches landed.

The real winner of Saturday’s fight is Khan, though, because his one-sided 12 round unanimous decision win over Kotelnik now makes Khan look pretty special. Khan may still be very vulnerable to getting knocked out by big punchers, but he clearly showed that he had the better stuff compared to Alexander in his win over Kotelnik. Alexander was there to be hit all night long by Kotelnik, and even when he was out the outside, Kotelnik quickly was able to get in range and start pounding on Alexander. Kotelnik’s left hook and right hand were big weapons for him on Saturday night. Alexandr tried to box him, but still kept getting hit with shot after shot. Right now, I would favor Khan by a large margin if he were to fight Alexander today. Khan would likely be able to dominate Alexander with his fast hands, big power and movement. Alexander doesn’t have the big power to give Khan problems.
