Cloud-Johnson: Another war on the horizon

ByPeter Wells: Tomorrow night in St Louis a surprisingly great undercard fight between, International Boxing Federation (IBF) Light Heavyweight ruler Tavoris Cloud and tough veteran Glen Johnson will slug it out in a very interesting match up. It’s been nearly a year since the 28 year old from Florida last stepped in the ring to win the IBF strap against aging Clinton Woods in a great 12 round battle. It was only the 2nd time he’d gone the distance and the 1st that he’d gone 12 rounds. After 65 contests the 41 year old Jamaican who now lives in Florida has gone that 12 rounds a number of occasions, most recently being his 2 defeats to Chad Dawson. After 13 defeats he’s now fighting to stay in the game.

Tavoris however could be heading for a showdown with Chad Dawson, if Chad can get past Jean Pascal next Saturday, and if Cloud beats Johnson. It would be a big unification fight and a decider to see who the best Light Heavyweight in the world is.

Glen is coming off a huge 6th round stoppage of young Yusaf Mack in February and is a hard puncher and can take a punch very well. He’s only been stopped once and that was in the 11th round against Bernard Hopkins which was his first defeat of his professional career.

Both fighters are good punchers and both like a good old fashioned scrap in the ring which will make for a thrilling fight and an extra plus is that neither fighter is likely to get an early stoppage which means we should be in for a 12 round slugfest. If I’m right than this fight will steal the show. I predict that Cloud will be strong to start with as Johnson will have his usual slow start, but he’ll gradually pull himself back into the fight and the fighters should trade toe-to-toe, but ultimately the quicker and fresher Tavoris Cloud should move in and out lead Johnson onto shots and altogether clearly outpoint the ‘Road Warrior’. Both fighters will be shaken and we may see flash knockdowns but the fight should go the full 12.
