Alexander beats Kotelnik in unanimous decision

By Sam Gregory: In the main event of the August 7th edition of HBO’s Boxing After Dark from the Scottrade Center, Saint Louis, MO undefeated southpaw Devon Alexander 20-0 with 13 KO’s defends his unbeaten record against 33 year old Ukrainian Andriy Kotelnik 31-3-1 with 13 KO’s in a scheduled 12 round bout for the IBF and WBC light welterweight titles.

In round 1 both men traded jabs feeling their opponent out. Kotelnik countered off Alexander’s jab with a combination that was mostly blocked. Kotelnik clinched when Alexander landed his jab, Alexander punched out and traded jabs until the closing bell.

In round 2 Alexander came out fast throwing his jab; Kotelnik countered and landed a solid combination; Kotelnik landed another solid right hand. Both men traded jabs, Alexander backed against the ropes, Kotelnik landed a solid right hand to finish the round.

Round 3 more of the same, Alexander was in control landing the more solid accurate punches; Kotelnik landed a solid right hand backing Alexander against the ropes; Kotelnik had the better round

In round 4 Kotelnik pushed forward; Alexander countered and landed a solid combination. Alexander stepped up the pace midway through the round throwing lightening fast jabs followed with a combination to the body and head; in the last 10 seconds Alexander landed a combination that backed Kotelnik against the ropes

Round 5 Alexander kept throwing his solid jab; Kotelnik countered but the southpaw Alexander was able to keep Kotelnik off balance. Kotelnik kept pushing forward and was having a good round until Alexander countered and took back control of the round

In round 6 Kotelnik kept pushing forward fighting at ease while Alexander looked tight and uncomfortable. Kotelnik landed his jab; Alexander countered and spun out from the ropes. Both men traded jabs and countered each other with combinations. Kotelnik had his best round

Round 7 Kotelnik landed a solid jab to Alexander face; Alexander kept moving to his right. Kotelnik kept landing jabs and pushing forward. In the last 30 seconds both men traded solid shots; Kotelnik looked to land the more solid accurate punches.

Round 8 more of the same with both men trading jabs, Alexander moving to his right this time landing the quicker more accurate punches; Kotelnik landed a solid shot but Alexander countered with a solid combination; in the last 10 seconds both men traded big power shots

In round 9 Alexander looked to be coming on strong throwing his jab and moving to his right; Kotelnik countered and landed a solid combination to the body and head. Time was called to check the cut over the eye of Alexander that was caused by an accidental crash of heads. When the fight resumed both men traded jabs, Kotelnik landed a big right hook.

Round 10 Alexander throws his jab, Kotelnik counters and looks to me like he landed the cleaner more aggressive punches. Kotelnik lands another big right hand. Both men trade shots again but Alexander came on strong in the closing seconds of the round.

Round 11 Alexander came out very strong in this round, Kotelnik counters. Alexander throws big combinations, Kotelnik blocks most of it. In the last 10 seconds both men traded jabs, Kotelnik clinches Alexander punches out

Round 12 Alexander throws combinations most of which seemed to be blocked; Kotelnik lands a solid jab that rocks Alexander’s head back. Alexander backs up, Kotelnik counters and lands a solid punch; going down to the final 10 seconds both men trade shots until the closing bell.

After the twelfth and final round the fight goes to the judge’s scorecards: 116-112 on all three cards all for the winner by unanimous decision Devon Alexander.

Alexander improves his unbeaten record to 21-0 with 13 KO’s while Andriy Kotelnik fell to 31-4-1 with 13 KO’s
