Image: Kessler vs. Green: Allan thinks he’ll stop Mikkel - NewsBy Jason Kim: Despite losing by as one-sided of a fight that you’ll ever see, super middleweight contender Allan Green (29-2, 20 KO’s) thinks he’ll stop World Boxing Council super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (43-2, 32 KO’s) on September 25th, in Denmark. Green, who will be turning 31 on September 20th, doesn’t have the slightest problems fighting in Kessler’s home country and sees the previous Super Six home fighters’ victories as nothing more than a ‘Coincidence.” In an article at thisisnottingham.co.uk, Green says “I don’t see Kessler lasting the whole fight, unless he brings something new to the table.”

This is kind of bold talk for a fighter that is coming off of a loss like the one Green suffered against Andre Ward in June of this year. Green pretty much lost every round of the fight and was never able to mount much of a threat. Green rarely threw any punches, and when he did, he looked tentative, as if he was more worried about getting hit in return than in trying to inflict damage. Kessler is an even better fighter than Ward in terms of offensive skills. Green is probably going to be getting hit a lot more with power shots compared to his last fight against Ward.

Kessler isn’t going to try and work on the inside the way that Ward was going in the Green fight. Instead, Kessler will stay on the outside, use his jab and set down on his shots to get maximum leverage. Ward stifled his own power by fighting on the inside and really didn’t load up with much. Green does have the power to stop Kessler, but he’s going to have to be less worried about what he’s getting hit with and more focused on just trying to land his power shots.

Kessler is coming off of a 12 round war with Carl Froch on April 24th, and will no doubt be bringing it against Green the entire fight. If Kessler wasn’t afraid to go right after the hard-punching Froch, then he’ll have no worries about trying to do the same against the equally hard-punching Green. Kessler will likely be able to take Green’s power shots without too many problems, but I’m not so sure that Green will be able to take Kessler’s punches all night without going down. Without a knockout, Green really doesn’t have much of a chance against Kessler.

Green has never been a really busy fighter and is more of a guy that lands one big shot to hurt his opponent and then unloads with a flurry of punches to finish them off. If he can’t hurt his opponent, then his fights become slow and tedious affairs where he barely lands more than his opponents. Kessler is likely going to be much more active than Green and he’s probably going to build up a huge lead in no time flat. Green will then find himself hopelessly behind in the fight and needing a knockout. At that point, Kessler is likely going to jab him to pieces and just play it safe down the stretch run.
