Andre Ward interested in fighting Carl Froch

Image: Andre Ward interested in fighting Carl FrochBy Scott Gilfoid: It seems that former WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KO’s) has upset the incredibly talented WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (22-0, 13 KO’s), who isn’t happy with some of Froch’s comments that he’s been making about him before and after his fights. Ward, 26, now would like nothing better to fight Froch, his fellow Super Six tournament contestant to show him who better fighter is. My my, it looks like Froch has really stepped in it this time.

Froch already got beat once in the Super Six tournament by Mikkel Kessler, and Froch could be facing another loss in his next fight in the tournament against Arthur Abraham in September. But Ward wants to give Froch another loss. Froch has one victory in the tournament with his controversial 12 round split decision over Andre Dirrell in their fight last year in October. Froch, fighting in front of a large home crowd in his home city of Nottingham, defeated Dirrell when two of the European judges scored the fight for Froch. The Mexican judge scored it for Dirrell. I had Dirrell easily winning the fight eight rounds to three with one even. But now Ward wants a piece of Froch, but the only way that can happen is if Froch can get by his next opponent the hard hitting Abraham. I’m not counting on that happening, unfortunately, but I’m hoping Froch does just to get the chance of seeing Froch possibly meet up with Ward in the semi finals of the Super Six tourney.

Ward, in an interview on East Side Boxing’s On the Ropes Radio program, had this to say about Froch: “I think one fight that may be interesting is me and Carl Froch. He seems to have a lot to say about me and about my fights before they happen. And he seems to have a lot of negative things to say about my fights after they happen. And he seems to be the one who wants to get in there. I think that would be a real interesting fight for fans, and that’s something I’m looking forward to, because I don’t put my month on anybody. I might give my opinion, but I don’t run off at the mouth about anybody. But he [Froch] seems to do that a lot. I think he wants to fight me and I’ll be happy about that. I think it would be an interesting match-up.”

I totally agree with Ward about that. I think a fight between Ward and Froch would be a very interesting fight, although I don’t see it as being a particularly competitive match-up. I see Froch as taking one of those old fashioned beat downs in a fight against Ward. You know, one of those humiliating fights where one fighter gets so badly dominated that they resort to body slamming and using other sorts of fouls to vent their frustration at being unable to compete. Hopefully, Froch would be penalized accordingly and either disqualified or at least had enough points taken away to where he would regain his senses and start taking his beating like a man.
