Image: Amir Khan: “(Devon) Alexander should fight Tim Bradley and I’ll fight Maidana”By Peter Wells: In last months Boxing Monthly magazine there was an interview with Amir Khan. He was asked to analysis the top contenders along with Freddie Roach and Ricky Hatton who gave a shorter but better summary of the fighters. First he was asked about Marquez and said that “Marquez would be a perfect fight for me soon- maybe next.” He also once again brought up that he reckons he doesn’t get enough credit in the UK. Freddie and Ricky both back a victory for Khan.

Khan was very interested in a match up with Maidana whom he says he wants next. It’s a difficult fight but do remember Andreas Kotelnik beat Maidana and Khan beat Kotelnik, so he won’t get much credit for that. Freddie isn’t as confident of a knockout, just an easy point’s victory, while Ricky advises Amir not to take the fight yet.

Amir doesn’t have much praise for Victor Ortiz who Khan says is a “B grade fighter” and “a notch below Bradley, Alexander and me”. That’s the way I see Ortiz as well, but that pretty much sums up that many boxing fans don’t want to see this fight until Victor has matured.

Timothy Bradley though comes as “the biggest draw in the division” according to Khan, and he see’s it happening early next year. Freddie though see’s it as a “50-50” fight but won’t shy away from the challenge. This would defiantly be a super fight down the line but according to Khan he wants to see Alexander-Bradley first.

Devon Alexander who is a talented youngster was criticized by Khan, he said he’s “Seriously overrated and I know I’d destroy him.” He also believes that he hasn’t fought anyone decent. Well he fought a still decent Junior Witter and then a tough Juan Urango who had just come down from Welterweight after going the distance with Andre Berto. Khan though has fought Andreas Kotelnik who was the worst champion at 140lbs whom Alexander will be fighting on August 7th, and a stoppage for Devon would be another huge boost. Then Khan fought Dmitriy Salita who isn’t even a deserved challenger and then takes on the light hitting Malignaggi who’d already been finished by Hatton and Diaz. Khan says that “he should fight Tim Bradley, I’ll fight Marcos Maidana, and then the winners can meet”. Well if Devon took on Maidana I’m sure Khan would have lots to say about that. Why does Alexander have to prove himself against the best 140lb fighter while Khan gets a guy who lost to someone Khan already beat? You may not feel the same way but isn’t that slightly hypocritical of Amir.

Whether Khan is serious about considering Alexander or Bradley it’s yet to be confirmed but at the moment he is looking at fighting the winner of Marquez-Diaz. Well let’s hope that doesn’t happen but at GBP he won’t be fighting anyone he may lose to for a long time. I’m sorry Khan but by now we want to see you in with the top guys at 140lbs not two fighters who’ve spent most of there careers below that limit.
