Price picks McDermott to beat Fury

In an article at Liverpoolecho.co.uk, Price says “He’s [McDermott] looking good and I can see John winning the fight his time. I can’t really give a fair view of Fury because I don’t know how his camp has gone or what shape he is in, but I do know John is looking in good shape.”

We’ll have to take Price at his word, because McDermott looks about the same as usual, no better no worse. He weighed in at a chunky looking 254 on Thursday’s weigh-in, which was about normal for McDermott. Fury, in contrast, weighed in at a career high of 270. However, Fury appears to be in good shape and his normally fat midsection even looks slightly reduced in size.

McDermott lost a 10 round decision to Fury last September. Few boxing fans agreed with the decision, however, the Board of Control called for a rematch between the two fighters. While McDermott has been inactive since then, Fury has been able to squeeze in a couple of fights, beating Tomas Mrazek and Hans-Joerg Blasko. Fury weighed 252 in March for the Blasko fight, but has packed on 18 pounds in the past three months since then, with all of it appearing to be muscle.

That’s a lot of bulk to add in such a short time, and you can imagine that Fury must have been hitting the weights furiously to put on that kind of muscle in that short of time period. Friday’s fight is likely going to be much different because of Fury’s added size for this fight. He only weighed 247 last time he fought McDermott last year, and is a lot bigger now. McDermott could find himself in trouble if that added size shows itself in bigger power for Fury.

Price, 26, will also be fighting on Friday’s card, going up against Pavol Polakovic (12-8, 1 KO’s) in a six round bout. Polakovic, 36, is a southpaw and that could be a problem for Price if he sticks around for any length of time. However, Price will likely take him out quickly. Palakovic has lost seven of his last eight fights coming into tonight’s bout against Price. “Nobody really likes fighting southpaws, but I had a good record against them in the amateurs, so I’m confident of handling this fella,” Price says.
