Nino decisions Mayol in close fight
By Jim Dower: Omar Nino (29-3-2, 11 KO’s) defeated World Boxing Council light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol (26-5-2, 20 Ko’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision to capture the WBC title on Saturday night at the Plaza De Toros Del Recento Expositor in San Juan del Rio, Queretaro, Mexico. The final judges’ scores were 115-112, 117-109 and 115-111. It was a difficult fight to score as Nino was a little more accurate with his shots and appeared to land more often.
However, Mayol landed the harder blows but came up short in the scoring. Like in a lot of Mayol’s fights, he bumped heads frequently with Nino and opened up some cuts over both of his eyes. However, the cuts didn’t prevent Nino from fighting effectively. Mayol and Nino had met in February, but the fight ended suddenly when Nino knocked Mayol out with a left hook to the head moments after nailing him with a right hand below the belt. The fight was ruled a technical draw.
