Mayweather should demand blood testing up to the day of the fight

Image: Mayweather should demand blood testing up to the day of the fightBy Dave Lahr: Okay, Manny Pacquiao has finally agreed to take the Olympic style random blood tests up to 14 days before the fight, but that’s the old negotiations with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Things have changed a lot in the last few months and Mayweather has pretty much established that he’s the cash cow of boxing, the number #1 moneymaker in pay-per-view buys. He should now demand that Pacquiao agree to the blood testing up until the day of the fight. And he should demand a 60% cut of the revenue. Mayweather just finished doubling Pacquiao’s PPV numbers with his fight against Shane Mosley with the 1.4 million PPV buys compared to Pacquiao’s measly 700,000 for his fight with Joshua Clottey.

Mayweather beat the number #3 welterweight in the division Mosley like he was beating up on an amateur. Mayweather showed his pure talent and greatness in that fight and no one can question his number #1 status now. To the victor goes the spoils. Mayweather is now in position to have Pacquiao take the random blood tests up until the fight if he wants to share the ring with the cash cow Mayweather. Some people may not like but that’s how it goes.

Pacquiao should have thought twice about fighting Clottey and chose someone better known to try and bring in the big numbers that Mayweather did recently. I don’t think it would have mattered. I still think Pacquiao would have come up on the short end of the PPV stick no matter who he fought. I think he could have gotten much better numbers had he told his promoter Bob Arum, ‘no thank you, I don’t want to fight Clottey. Give me a popular fighter like Mosley.’ But I think Pacquiao would have come up far short of Mayweather’s numbers.

Okay, so Mayweather needs to ask for the 60-40 deal, and then the random blood tests all the way up until the fight. If he wants to be nice, he can demand random blood tests up until 3 days before the fight, since Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach has been talking about how it takes three days for Pacquiao to recover after having blood removed from his body. Well, three days before the fight should be ample time for Pacquiao to recover, shouldn’t it? Mayweather needs to call the shots and get Pacquiao to bend to his will. It’s not a big deal. Pacquiao is the one that is looking to add Mayweather’s name to his legacy. Mayweather doesn’t care about all that. He’s the money man and a business man and he needs to look out for himself.

This is why Pacquiao should take the random blood tests up until the fight or at least three days and give into to whatever Mayweather asks in negotiations if he wants to make the fight happen. Pacquiao was in a position of strength during their first negotitions, even getting Mayweather to agree to a $10 million dollar weight penalty. Now it’s Mayweather’s turn to call the shots and he needs to demand the blood testing that he wants and a nice cut of the revenue.
