Image: Mayweather-Mosley: Floyd ups his performance once again and still looks like he has more to offerBy Peter Wells: Last night we all witnessed another tremendous performance to one of the most gifted fighters ever to live. Most of us believed that Mayweather would run, but the only way he was running was forwards, even in the final rounds when he already had the victory in the bag he never let his fans down. Floyd was obviously looking for something extra special, and despite not getting a knockout he did deliver a special performance.

Shane Mosley was outclassed from round 3 onwards but like a true warrior he is he never stopped trying, Floyd was just too quick and the right hand was there so fast he couldn’t react. Mosley didn’t grow old in there last night, he was just beaten by the better fighter and there is never any shame in that.

Apart from the second round where Mosley shook Mayweather twice with the big right, on the second occasion Floyd’s knees really buckled but he kept himself up and fought on. Mayweather dominated, coming forward and showing the fans what they wanted to see. Mayweather was never caught on the ropes where Mosley could have taken the fight and rarely let Mosley land clean. Well actually apart from the 2 shots in the second round Mosley didn’t really land any big punches at all. Floyd stepped it up and as I said would be the outcome, he adapted and Mosley didn’t. He came out in round 3 like he was starting fresh and was in control from there onwards. Mosley was tired at the end and at the end accepted defeat very well, he is a true sportsman.

Mayweather landed more punches in every area of the body and head and those right hands were harder than ever, and had he thrown them against Juan Manuel Marquez then it wouldn’t have lasted long. Mosley’s chin was great and Mayweather still withstood Mosley’s onslaught in round 2 and despite his legs nearly betraying him, his chin didn’t. Mosley was shaken at times and with all the holding, Kenny Bayless had a great night as referee and made sure the action kept flowing.

Mayweather-Pacquiao is the next step for definite, let’s hope that Manny takes the blood tests and we should see a classic. Mayweather knew Mosley inside out thanks to Floyd Mayweather Sr and Roger Mayweather and shows he knows how to beat anyone, so let’s put him to the test against Pacquiao. I could well turn out to be easier than the Mosley fight and he could even get a stoppage.

As for Mosley he should do what he feels is right, if he still has the desire and passion to carry on then why not, He didn’t get badly hurt and really doesn’t take a massive amount of punches. But if he can’t find that desire then he should call it quits, he can still work in the gym with everyone and train his son Shane Mosley Jr, I’ll back him either way because he is a true champion but last night it just wasn’t meant to be.

On the undercard Saul Alvarez put up a top performance beating up Jose Miguel Cotto before stopping him in the 9th. He boxed brilliantly and his punching was outstanding. He’s a superstar in the making and at only 20 with 33 fights, he can take his time. I’m pretty sure he can be hitting titles next year if not late this year. He dominated for 9 rounds and his final outburst was too much for the referee to see.
