There is a “98 percent” chance that the fight will happen between Grant and Adamek for possibly August or September 2010. Grant has reportedly accepted the financial offer from Adamek’s team. Ziggy Rozalski, Adamek’s promoter, says “Grant is a good boxer and a big guy. A fight with him will be a great test before a clash with Klitschko. Grant’s fight with Andrew Golota was incredible.”

A couple of things: One, Grant’s fight with Golota took place 11 years ago and Grant isn’t the same fighter he was back then. Besides that, Grant was never a really good heavyweight to begin with and was badly exposed by heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis in a 2nd round blowout in April 2000. Grant was also stopped in one round by Jameel McCline. Since the Lewis fight, Grant has also exclusively faced 2nd tier opposition, with the exception of his fight against Dominick Guinn in 2003. Grant was stopped in the 7th round in that fight. For Adamek to be facing a 2nd tier heavyweight like Grant at this point, it seems like a cherry picking move.

I don’t know how this fight could prepare the 6’1” Adamek for either of the Klitschko brothers. I’d much rather see if Adamek could beat one of the higher ranking heavyweights in the division like Samuel Peter, Denis Boytsov, Eddie Chambers or Alexander Povetkin rather than seeing him matched against a 2nd tier heavyweight like Grant. This fight won’t help Adamek prepare himself for a fight against the Klitschko brothers in any way. Adamek needs to work on his defense a little more before fighting the Klitschko brothers, because was staggered a couple of times against the slow moving Arreola, even though Adamek ran most of the time and was fighting a one-armed man for much of the fight because Arreola had hurt his left hand.

At 6’1”, ranked #5 WBC, #6 IBF, #9 WBA and #11 WBO, I see Adamek as nothing more than another knockout victim of the Klitschko brothers. I’d rather see if Adamek can beat a good young heavyweight with movement like Chambers or Boytsov rather than having him go from a fight against Grant into a bout against the Klitschko brothers. But whatever the case, if this is how they want to keep Adamek winning then so be it. He’ll be destroyed by one of the Klitschko brothers and then drop back in the pack and hang there with all the other heavyweight contenders until he either retires or waits out the Klitschko brothers until they retire.

At 33, Adamek doesn’t have youth on his side and needs to go after WBA heavyweight champion David Haye instead of ending up as a knockout victim against the Klitschko brothers. That would be the smarter choice. I didn’t see anything from Adamek’s fight with Arreola or Jason Estrada that would suggest that he could even win a round against either of the Klitschko brothers. He’s too short, and doesn’t have the power at heavyweight. At cruiserweight, Adamek was a good puncher, but in coming up in weight 20+ pounds, Adamek has lost his power and is only an average puncher at best.
