Image: Froch says he’ll easily beat Abraham and KO Kessler – NewsBy Scott Gilfoid: World Boxing Council super middleweight champion Carl Froch (26-0, 20 KO’s) is extremely confident about his chances of beating both Mikkel Kessler (42-2, 32 KO’s) and Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KO’s) in the stage 2 and stage 3 Super Six tournament bouts. Froch, 32, will be fighting Kessler on April 24th, in Herning, Denmark. In an article at the Sun, Froch says “If he loses, Kessler will still go to his final group stage fight in the Super Six, but he’s pretty much in the last chance saloon. He’s fighting for a world title and has been given a gift horse, really, so I think he’s going to take the bull by the horns and give it a really, really good go. He’ll be trying to take the title off me, so it’s my job to make sure he doesn’t. I’m expecting him to bring his A-game and I’m quite ferocious.”

Froch talks pretty bold for someone who appeared to be give a gift decision himself with his win over the talented Andre Dirrell in the stage 1 Super Six bout last October. Froch looked positively terrible in that fight, missing with punches all night long. Froch looked poor in that fight and looked almost as bad in his previous fight against Jermain Taylor last April.

Froch was dropped in that fight and had to rally in the final round to score a knockout to get the win. If Taylor had stayed on his feet, Froch would have had his first loss of his career. I could understand Froch being confident about his chances against Kessler if Froch had at least dominated his last two opponents, but that’s not what we’ve been seeing. Froch has been struggling and looking slow, one-dimensional and terribly limited as a fighter. I wouldn’t like Froch’s chances in a rematch with Dirrell, as long as the fight doesn’t place in Nottingham.

Froch also feels confident about his chances at beating Arthur Abraham, another Super Six tournament contestant. Froch says “I’ve got another headline fight against Abraham straight after Kessler, so I’ve got the makings of becoming massive.”

In theory, Froch could become a massive star if he beats Kessler and Abraham, but the problem is I see Froch losing badly to both of them. And in the case of Abraham, I’m guessing Froch will get slaughtered in five or six rounds. I don’t even see that as a close fight. Froch will make the mistake of going right after and trying to trade with him for six rounds. For Abraham, this will be an easy fight because a lot of his European opponents have stood in front of him and made it easy for him like Froch will probably be doing.

Froch says “And that’s exactly what I want. I want the recognition. I fancy doing a number on King Arthur [Abraham] quite easily. No disrespect to him as he’s tough, strong and can bang a bit, but he’s quite a small man. He’s a middleweight who’s stepped up and as far as I’m concerned, he’s not really a boxer. He’s a fighter and a brawler. I’ve always coped with fighters and brawler quite easily, so I think I’ll knock him out.” It sounds like Froch is describing himself, except for the part where he calls Abraham small.

I agree with Abraham being small, and a brawler. However, that’s exactly what Froch is. He’s a brawler, and not much of a boxer. If Froch was a boxer, he wouldn’t struggled so badly when he was fighting Dirrell, a pure boxer in his last fight. The same goes for Froch’s bout against boxer/puncher Jermain Taylor. Froch had major problems with Taylor’s boxing skills, and it wasn’t until Froch was able to get Taylor slugging with him that Froch was able to start taking over the fight.
