Image: Haye advises for Tyson to stay retiredBy Sean McDaniel: There are rumors that 43-year-old Mike Tyson could be considering a comeback in 2010. Tyson, who hasn’t fought since being stopped in the 5th round in 2005, appears to have taken off a considerable amount of weight recently and looks to be in or near fighting shape. World Boxing Association heavyweight champion David Haye doesn’t think that Tyson should come back for some reason. In an article at Timesonline, Haye says “It would be a sad spectacle. I’ve never met Mike Tyson, but looking at his physical condition, there is now way he should think about boxing.”

Haye obviously hasn’t seen recent video of Tyson where he not only looks slim and near his own fighting weight, but he looks incredibly youthful for a 43-year-old. Tyson looks a lot younger than he did before he started taking off the weight months ago.

Haye continues “His last fights were quite sad and the only reason he would be coming back would be for the money. He would not be fighting because he had anything to prove. Tyson did it all, but it was 20-odd years ago that he was in his prime.” One can understand Hayes concern, but then again Haye probably doesn’t need money.

It’s up to Tyson what he wants to do with his life, and Haye should understand that. You can’t blame Tyson for wanting to make a comeback, if that’s what he intends on doing. As of now, it’s all speculation and rumor, because Tyson still hasn’t publically said that he plans on getting back in the ring or not. 46-year-old Evander Holyfield has been rumored to be a possible opponent for Tyson.

In 1996, Tyson was beaten by Holyfield in an 11th round stoppage. The next year, he fought a rematch against Holyfield in June 1997. This time, the fight was stopped in the 3rd round and Tyson was disqualified after biting Holyfield twice in the round. Since that time, there has been talk of a third rubber match between Tyson and Holyfield, but as of yet the two fighters have been unable to get in the ring. Holyfield is interested in fighting Tyson again despite having been bitten last time he fought him.

Holyfield has remained active since their second fight, although his career has gone rapidly downhill since 1999. Holyfield plans on fighting former heavyweight champion Francois Botha in April 2010.
