Who should Ricky Hatton fight next?

By Sean McDaniel: Ricky Hatton (45-2, 32 KO’s) says he’s going to come back for one more fight in June. Although looking at how heavy that Hatton, 31, has become, it’s hard to imagine him ever fighting again. His once slim physique is now coated with a generous amount of fat. Hatton says that he wants to come back for a fight in June against either one of the champions or a pound for pound fighter. Hatton has mentioned some names, Michael Katsidis, Juan Manuel Marquez or Vyacheslav Senchenko as potential opponents.

Of those names, the 36-year-old Marquez would seem to be far and away the most appealing of the bunch. Although Marquez was easily defeated by Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his last fight in 2009, he still has a lot left in the tank. However, Marquez’s name has been mentioned as a potential opponent for Amir Khan, so he might not be available by the time that Hatton is ready to stage his comeback in June.

Hatton doesn’t seem interested in fighting Khan. That would probably be the best possible opponent for Hatton, because he would have a good chance of winning if he could connect with a big shot on Khan’s sometimes fragile chin. Hatton would have to deal with Khan’s movement though and his hand speed. That might not be an easy thing for Hatton to do. He’s put on a lot of weight lately and you never know how it will affect him when he finally takes off all that weight.

Katsidis, a lightweight, would be a great match up for Hatton if he plans on ending his career with a win. However, a fight against Katsidis might not make the huge impact that Hatton is looking for. Katsidis has already been beaten in recent years by Joel Casamayor and Juan Diaz, so it might not be such a big deal if he’s beaten yet against by Hatton. But if Hatton is looking to get out of boxing with a win, then Katsidis is a good option for him. I don’t see the point of fighting him, frankly. Hatton is a bigger and has fought much more established fighters than this. It would seem like he’s doing Katsidis a favor by fighting him.

Other opponents for Hatton would be guys like Ricardo Torres, Marcos Maidana, Kendall Holt, Timothy Bradley and Devon Alexander. Hatton would be showing a lot of courage to take these guys on, because they’re all good fighters with a lot of power. I think Hatton would lose to all of them, probably by knockout, but Hatton would be showing a great deal of courage just to step in the ring with these guys. I seriously doubt Hatton will fight guys like this. It’s too dangerous. My guess is Hatton will opt for a small guy like Katsidis and go out with a win that doesn’t have too much meaning.
