Tua to fight 42-year-old Seldon next

By Eric Thomas: In disappointing news, David Tua (50-3-1, 43 KO’s) has reportedly named his next opponent for February 7th of 2010, choosing to take on former World Boxing Association heavyweight champion Bruce Seldon (40-8, 36 KO’s). What makes the choice not particularly interesting is the age of the 42-year-old Seldon.

It was thought that after Tua’s impressive 2nd round knockout of Shane Cameron that the 37-year-old Tua would face someone a little better than Seldon. After all, Tua has said that he wants to challenge for a title in the near future.

Seldon, however, isn’t exactly the type of opponent that will prepare Tua for the likes of Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko. Seldon was stopped in the 5th round last year by Kevin Johnson. Although Seldon has picked up wins against B level fighters in the past five years, he’s come up short when stepping it up against decent competition, losing to Gerald Nobles and Tye Fields in the past five years. In July, Seldon was stopped in the 9th round by Fres Oquendo.

This should be an easy fight for Tua, but it seems like a total waste of time. I see this as a regressing move on Tua’s part. He might as well not fight at all rather than take another fight against an easy opponent.

Depending on how things go against Seldon, Tua will reportedly be facing 38-year-old Friday Ahunanya (24-5-3, 13 KO’s) in March 2010.

Seldon has a reputation for having a weak chin. I can’t imagine this fight going beyond the 2nd round. For Tua, this seems to be another case of him fighting yet another C level fighter. It was hoped that he would start stepping it up, but this looks like more of the same thing he’s been doing in the past five years.
