williams_danny4646By Peter Wells: Next February British Heavyweight champion Danny Williams 41-8 will defend his title against tough Commonwealth boxing champion Sam Sexton 13-1. Sexton last fought this November in a rematch with Martin Rogan, winning by retirement after 6 rounds. Last May Sexton dethroned Rogan via a controversial 8th round stoppage. Sexton’s only defeat was in 2008 where he was stopped in the 6th and final round against Derek Chisora, it was Sam’s 8th fight while it was Derek’s 5th.

Danny Williams last fought in October losing in the first stage of the Prizefighter tournament, where he was expected to take on rival Audrey Harrison in the final, but was outpointed by unknown Carl Baker. Before that he had beaten John McDermott for a second time, losing in between to Polish-English Albert Sosnowski, being stopped by a cracking couple of shots in the 8th. Danny Williams has had an up and down career, for instance going from stopping Mike Tyson to being humiliated by Vitali Klitschko, and from beating McDermott to being stopped by Sosnowski. Danny has a lot to be proud of and another defeat here would be horrible to see, but it is probably the most likely.

Sam Sexton is on great form and is defiantly the fighter who could end Williams’ career, but how many times have we said that before, the 36 year old never knows when to quit, and it looks like we could have him for a little longer, although after seeing him outscored by Baker, it doesn’t look likely. Danny can be backed up for that defeat, a fighter who’s used to 10 and 12 rounder’s aren’t always the best starters, and that could have been the reason for his defeat, three rounds isn’t a lot of time to get going. But his chin looked fragile being floored twice in the opener, and was floored against Sosnowski as well. It should be interesting, but it looks like Sam could be in for an easy night.

On the undercard we have a fight we have very much being looking forward to; finally Michael Jennings will step in the ring with unbeaten British Welterweight champion Kell Brook. Jennings has twice fought since being stopped in a brave attempt to beat Miguel Cotto, and was WBU champion, and is still a decent fighter. Brook is 20-0 and hasn’t gone past 3 rounds for 3 fights stopping Michael Lomax in the 3rd stopping Stuart Elwell in the 2nd and destroying Kevin McIntyre in 1. He hasn’t actually been past 7 rounds in his career, and could be took very far against a durable Jennings, and will have to train exceptionally hard if he is to make his world title dream come true. A full 12 round fight would be very good for him, another quick stoppage would not help him one little bit.

Jennings could form an upset but, may still have the Cotto fight on his mind, and has been defeated by Young Mutley and if Kell Brook can keep up his great form should retire the brave Jennings in 10 rounds, where it will be pretty close for the first half before Kell starts to pull away.

Also on the undercard is the three Olympians, Frankie Gavin, Billy Joe Saunders and James Degale, there are also Derek Chisora, Ryan, Michael and Liam Walsh and Vinny Mitchell all with fights still to be arranged.
