jamie3By Dewi Powell: For a sport often misunderstood by non-followers its great to see a genuine gesture by a gentleman in any walk of life. This man has won gold in the Commonwealth Games, is an Ex-Calzaghe camp fighter and was nominated by the British Boxing Board of Control for “Contest of the year” in 2009, introducing Jamie Arthur.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jamie at the event “An Evening with Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton” in Cardiff at the start of the year. He posed for a few photos with me and my friends, talked about his up coming fight and we wished him the best for it. It was lovely for him to have the time for a quick chat with us unlike other sportsmen I’ve met.

Since turning professional Jamie admittedly has had an eventful career. It took Jamie 12 months to reach a record of 7(3KO’s)–0–0 but then a cut and a 5th round stoppage in the following fight left Jamie with 2 losses on his record and his path met a crossroads. Being a family man, Jamie opted out of the sport, this being in 2005, for a while and in this time he opened a gym named GOLD ABC in Newport and gained qualification in being a fitness personal trainer.

3 years after retirement Jamie came back with a bang! Fighting out of a new gym the Cambran man has notched up 6 wins in exciting fashion and has two fights up coming. The second being a shot at the undefeated British Flyweight champion Martin Lindsay in the coming new year.

However before the British title shot, Jamie has a fight in the Newport Leisure Centre and has demonstrated one of the most generous acts of charity I’ve seen from a boxer. In a time of global economic difficulty, Jamie has decided to give all ticket money from fight night on December 11th to charity. For me, the best part is that it isn’t a publicity stunt or part of a corporate deal because via his personal facebook page he’s taken suggestions from family, friends and fans.

Like I said earlier, for a sport often misunderstood by non-followers its great to see a genuine gesture by a gentleman in any walk of life.
