ward4353By Sam Gregory: Tonight Andre Ward won a technical decision in the final fight of the stag one matchup of the Super Six World Boxing Classic in his hometown of Oakland, California. At the end of the fight ringside observers counted no less than five unintentional cash of heads in this fight leading to an early stoppage that went to the judge’s scorecards.

Andre Ward fought an almost perfect fight using his jab; fighting on the inside and landing hard combinations that keep the favored WBA champion Mikkel Kessler twisting in the wind for ten and a half rounds.

From the opening bell Andre Ward’s blinding speed proved to be too much for Mikkel Kessler as the Danish super middleweight champion never really landed anything of significance the entire fight.

In the first round both men came out cautiously testing their opponent but it didn’t take long for Ward to find a home for his Super Six bout stopped in the 11th due to a clash of heads; Ward wins TD

blistering jab almost every time it was thrown.

By the second round it became obvious that Kessler was very uncomfortable fighting in close as he began tying up with Ward more and more as the round progressed. Going into the third round Kessler was trying to find his range with the jab but Ward continually beat him to the punch.

Coming out for the fourth round Kessler had a mouse under his right eye which was later shown to be caused by an accidental clash of heads. Ward looked very confident landing his jab at will and dictating the offensive flow of the fight. Ward switched to southpaw in this round which left Kessler looking totally defenseless against the challenger’s aggressive forward attack.

In round five Kessler was starting to look desperate with his looping punches that Ward was easily able to offset with his well timed lightening fast jab and powerful right hook. Andre Ward was at the point where he almost looked overconfident when he was taking his time to measure his punches. Midway through this fight rounds were adding up for Andre Ward as Kessler was still trying to find his distance.

In round seven Mikkel Kessler was missing badly with wild looping punches. When the round was over Kessler told his cornermen he wasn’t able to see. Talk began of stopping the fight but Kessler said he wanted to continue.

In rounds eight and nine Andre Ward continued to land his punches at will; Kessler was barley doing enough to keep the fight from being stopped not landing anything of significance. After round nine a replay shows the cut on Kessler’s face looked to be caused by an accidental clash of heads.

In round 10 Ward landed more hard shots to Kessler’s head. Ward appeared to be hurting Kessler with ever shot. Ward is just landing hard nasty shots to Kessler’s face. After this round there is more talk of stopping the fight if Kessler doesn’t do more. After round ten Kessler’s corner tells him he needs a knockout to win.

A replay after this round shows another clash of heads.

Going into round eleven Kessler comes out throwing his jab than ties up; Ward punches out. The referee steps in and calls time for the ringside doctor to look at Kessler cuts. At 1:42 seconds of round 11 the referee calls a halt to the fight. they announce that they’re going to the judge’s scorecards because the fight was stopped due to the clash of heads.

The score’s are announced 97-93 on one card and 98-92 on two cards for the winner still undefeated and new WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward.

Andre Ward improves his record to 21-0 and moves one step closer to winning the Super Six matchup; Mikkel Kessler falls to 42-2.
