Haye wants the Klitschko brothers – News

haye6583By Scott Gilfoid: Fresh off his horrible performance against World Boxing Association heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev last night in Nuremberg, Germany, the newly crowned WBA heavyweight champion David Haye said “I said I want to be unified champion and the Klitschkos are definitely in my sights.” Oh, I imagine both Wladimir Klitschko and Vitali Klitschko are terrified about the prospects of having to face Haye after watching him run around the ring for 12 rounds last night and average little better than 10 punches thrown per round.

Haye looked like he’d have problems against any good heavyweight in the division last night and barely was able to get the nod over the immobile 7-foot Valuev, beating him by a 12-round majority decision. Two of the judges had Haye winning by four rounds, scoring it 116-112. I thought that was ridiculous scoring. The fight appeared to be a draw from what I saw.

I could see Haye winning by a round, but nothing more than that. Valuev was horrible as well and looked 100 years old against the 29-year-old Haye. But as far as Haye fighting the Klitschko brothers, I don’t think Haye deserves to be in the same ring with them at this point. Let Haye build up some experience before he gets battered senseless by the brothers.

I have no problem with Haye fighting either of them, but the way Haye looked last night, he’d last little more than two or three rounds at best. And I’m not just talking last night. Haye hasn’t shown me in any of his fights that he has the talent – or size – to beat either of the Klitschko brothers. Haye is just too crude of a fighter, too wild with his haymaker shots and his one punch at a time style.

You don’t beat fighters like the Klitschko brothers by throwing one shot at a time and averaging 10 to 20 punches thrown per round. That kind of thing will beat the poorer fighters but against a fighter like the Klitschko brothers with reach, speed and a high power offense, Haye would literally be blown out of the water. It’s like matching battle ship against a pleasure cruiser in the open ocean.

I would love to see it, but Haye would do better if he at least build up a resume before facing them to give the appearance that it would be a competitive fight. I don’t see Haye ever having the talent to beat either of the Klitschko brothers in this life time. Haye can fight for the next five years against nothing but the best in the heavyweight division, but he’ll still get destroyed when he faces the Klitschko brothers.

But Haye would still be better off showing to the boxing public that he can beat the top heavyweight contenders, like Chris Arreola, Kevin Johnson and Odlanier Solis, before facing the Klitschko brothers. Right now, Haye doesn’t belong with them in my view. It would be like taking candy from a small baby. Haye would be toyed with by either Klitschko, and Haye’s face would be bloodied and torn apart.

Vitali Klitschko had this to say about Haye’s win last night according to CNN: “Full congratulations (to Haye). It was a good performance, a good points win. It was very close. It is a good fight for the future [Haye vs. Klitschko], maybe. I am ready to fight anyone in the world. I am ready to show to everyone I am the strongest in the world.” I seriously doubt that Haye wants to fight Vitali anytime soon, however.

Haye has a mandatory bout coming up next against John Ruiz. After that, Haye will likely try to talk IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko into a fight rather than the steel-chinned Vitali. It would be a slaughter to match Haye against Vitali. Against Wladimir, Haye has a small chance of winning if he can land one of his pot shots before Wladimir destroys him from long distance. I give Haye about a 1% chance of beating Wladimir and no chance of beating Vitali.
