Salgado crushes Linares, Nishioka stops Hernandez – Boxing Results

linares4By Manuel Perez: In a shocking upset, number #6 rated World Boxing Council super featherweight contender Juan Carlos Salgado (21-0, 15 KO’s) took out previously unbeaten WBC super featherweight champion Jorge Linares (27-1, 18 KO’s) in a 1st round TKO on Saturday night to capture Linares’ title at the Yoyogi #2 Gymnasium, in Tokyo, Japan.

Linares, 24, who originally comes from Venezuela and now lives and fights out of Tokyo, Japan, was taken by surprise by the huge power of Salgado early in the 1st round and was dropped to the canvas after getting hammered by a big left hook from Salgado. Linares looked both cautious and hurt after the shot because of the sudden quickness, retreated to the ropes in a final last stand.

Salgado then moved in and dropped Linares for a second time in the round, tagging him with several hard shots to the body followed by two fights to the head that sent Linares to the canvas for the second and final time in the round. Referee Luis Pabon then moved in and stopped the bout at 1:13 of the 1st.

Although this outcome may be shocking to some boxing fans, I’m not in the least surprised by it. Linares looked like utter garbage last year in his fight with Panamanian Whyber Garcia, taking punishment for the first four rounds before coming to life in the 5th and taking Garcia out with a series of hard shots.

I knew then that Linares’ days were numbered. This is why I was so amused when Golden Boy Promotions signed Linares up recently. I saw it as a big mistake because Linares showed in the Garcia fight that he has problems against aggressive fighters that can punch and who blitz him early. Linares may have smooth boxing skills, but when he’s being attacked, he looks like a deer caught in the headlights and reacts poorly to pressure.

As soon as I heard that Linares was going to be fighting Salgado, a pressure fighter with excellent power, I suspected that Linares would get taken out. Sure enough, Salgado did the job and put Linares away. Golden Boy needs to be going after Salgado to sign him rather than Linares.

There obviously will be a rematch now, because with the hype and money that’s backing Linares, they’ll make it worthwhile for Salgado to fight him again, probably in Japan, of course. I don’t see the fight being any different. Salgado has too much power and is a classic pressure fighter and Linares is ill suited to this type of fighting.

He likes to fight at a more slower pace where he can dictate action and throw his smooth combinations and wow the crowd with his boxing expertise. He’s not a real rugged type fighter and looked out of his element against Salgado, a fighter who comes from the tough streets of Mexico.

World Boxing Council super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka (33-4-3, 22 KO’s) stopped Ivan Hernandez (26-4-1, 15 KO’s) in the 3rd round of a one-sided bout. Nishioka landed several really hard left hands in the 3rd round. After the round ended, Hernandez couldn’t come out for the 4th, because he had apparently injured his jaw in the 3rd round.
