Dirrell: “I’m going to punch holes in that gasbag [Froch]”

dirrel4457By Scott Gilfoid: In the latest presser from undefeated Andre Dirrell (18-0, 13 KO’s) today, he sent a searing line drive right down WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch’s throat, saying “I’m going to punch holes in that gasbag [Froch].” Oh boy, I wonder what old Froch is going to say about that. He’s probably going to blow a gasket when he reads what Dirrell is saying now.

Froch needs to stay in control of his temper for a little while longer, because we still have a week to go before he steps foot in the ring against Dirrell on October 17th, in Nottingham for the first fight of the Super Six tournament. Froch, who captured the World Boxing Council super middleweight title only after the former champion Joe Calzaghe vacated the title last year, seems plenty worried about facing the American Dirrell judging by his angry sounding comments in the media.

And Froch should be worried. Dirrell is easily the best opponent that Froch has faced in his career, better than Jean Pascal and Jermain Taylor, the last two opponents of Froch. Dirrell is a technically sound fighter who defends well and has blazing fast hand speed. In other words, Dirrell is the complete opposite of Froch.

Dirrell: “Mr. Froch sounds more than a little worried about fighting me. I suggest he wear a diaper under his trunks so he doesn’t embarrass himself in front of his fans.” I hope Froch doesn’t have an accident in the ring. How would look him dribbling all over the place in front of his English fans? Froch needs to stand tall, enter the ring and take his beating like a man.

There’s really no shame in getting trounced in front of one’s own fans. At least they’ll cheer him afterwards and be there to support him regardless of how bad he gets beaten by Dirrell. That’s what fans are for, right? They should be there for a fighter through thick and thin, so when Froch ends up getting his tail kicked in this fight, the British boxing fans can then step in and help him up off the canvas, wipe away the blood and perhaps some tears and boost his spirits.

On October 17th, Froch is going to need all the support he can get from his Nottingham fans, believe me. I hope they scream their heads off because Froch is facing an almost certain beating from Dirrell. The 32-year-old Froch had to pick himself up off the canvas in his last fight against Jermain Taylor, but was able to come back late in the fight to stop Taylor in the 12th.

It was a super effort by Froch, but he took an awful amount of punishment in that fight, the type that often has lasting effects on a fighter. I’m hoping that Froch doesn’t have to take similar punishment from the harder hitting Dirrell. The one good thing about Dirrell is that he hits harder than Froch and Taylor and will likely be able to end the fight much sooner. That way Froch won’t have to suffer as much before the fight is stopped.
