taylor234238By Sam Gregory: Five of the world’s top boxing promoters have teamed up with Showtime sports to put on a round-robin tournament for six of the best super middleweights to compete for the Super Six World Boxing Classic trophy. On October 17th former undisputed middleweight champion Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor 28-3-1 with 17 KO’s will face “King” Arthur Abraham 30-0 with 24 KO’s and Carl “The Cobra” Froch 25-0 with 20 KO’s will face U.S. Olympic medalist Andre “The Matrix” Dirrell 18-0 with 13 KO’s to kickoff the Super Six World Boxing Classic.

The super middleweight round-robin tournament was the idea of Showtime sports senior VP Ken Hershman. In Hershman’s opinion the tournament would straighten out the super middleweight division which currently has four different world champions.

The five promoters involved in this historic event include Lou DiBella of DiBella Entertainment, Dan Goossen of Goossen Tutor Promotions, Mick Hennessy of Hennessy Sports, Gary Shaw of Gary Shaw Productions LLC and Wilfried and Kalle Sauerland of Sauerland Event who will promote the tournament which will run through the spring of 2011.

The six contestants in this tournament have a combined record of 161-4-1 with 117 knockouts: former IBF middleweight champion “King” Arthur Abraham of Germany; US Olympic medalist Andre “The Matrix” Dirrell of Flint, Mich.; WBC super middleweight champion Carl “The Cobra” Froch of England; WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel “Viking Warrior” Kessler of Denmark; former undisputed middleweight champion Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor of Little Rock, Ark. and US Olympic Gold medalist Andre “SOG” Ward of Oakland, Calif.

IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute was not invited to compete; Hershman did not care to say why.

All the bouts in the Super Six Classic will be fought under the Unified Rules of Boxing. Each man fights three bouts against different opponents in the field in the points based Group Stage of competition; a win = 2 points with a one point bonus for KO/TKO; loss = 0 points and 1 point for a draw. After the Group Stage, the four fighters with the highest number of points will advance to the single elimination Semi Final. The winners of the Semi Final bouts will advance to the finals and fight for the inaugural Super Six World Boxing Classic trophy.
