Haye: “Next year I’ll be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world”

haye5455648By Jason Kim: British heavyweight David Haye (22-1, 21 KO’s) is anxious to get at WBA heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev, and is looking forward to fighting him on November 7th, in Germany. I’m looking forward to taking on the big hairy freak show I’ve got to knock out in November,” Haye said in an interview with The Sun.

David is training hard for that fight and looking to take Valuev’s title away from him, hopefully by an impressive knockout. Haye has a tough task ahead of him, because Valuev, 7’2”, is close to a foot taller than the 6’3” Haye, and outweighs the British former cruiserweight champion by over 100 pounds.

Haye came into his last fight against Monte Barrett at 215 in November. Valuev weighed at a light (light for him, that is) 310 in his last fight against Evander Holyfield in December. Valuev, 36, won that fight by a 12 round majority decision. Haye won’t have problems outmaneuvering the big Valuev, but the real problem for Haye is whether he can generate big power punching up at Valuev’s head.

Haye has never had to punch that high before and he might lose power having to reach that far up. However, Monte Barrett was able to stagger Valuev in their fight three years ago in October. Valuev was only briefly hurt and still came back to stop Barrett in the 11th round.

Haye: “Once I beat Valuev, there’s no other fight out there for the Klitschkos than me — it’s a no-brainer.”

Haye wants to go after one of the Klitschko brothers’ when/if he can get by Valuev. This is admirable of Haye to want to try and reinitiate negotiations with one of the Klitschko brothers, because neither of them is too happy with Haye. But this is really Haye’s only option if he wants to make big money as a heavyweight.

If Haye picks up Valuev’s World Boxing Association title, the opponents that Haye would be looking to face as a champion would be contenders like John Ruiz, Ruslan Chagaev, Kevin Johnson, Kali Meehan, Denis Boytsov, Alexander Ustinov and Chris Arreola. In each case, all of them are good fighters, but none of them with the name and the money making ability that either of the Klitschko brothers possess. This is why Haye has little choice but to go back, swallow his pride and try to line up a unification bout against one of the Klitschko’s.

Hopefully, Haye uses more tact next time and doesn’t turn them off with insults and heavy handed negotiating tactics. If so, Haye may lose his chance for a big money fight against the Klitschko brothers. Without them, Haye would then he forced to fight the top contenders and he may find that it’s not an easy thing to do.

Haye doesn’t have the size of the Klitschko’s and will have to go to war with the top heavyweight contenders, taking their big shots and hopefully come back with even harder shots to take them out.

“Everyone will want to see how this little guy will beat someone who’s much bigger than him.,” Haye said. I’m not sure if boxing fans will get as excited as Haye thinks they will. Valuev looks to be ready for the taking, and was probably very lucky to have escaped with his title in his last fight with Holyfield.
