Fury Shouldn’t Waste time Giving McDermott a Rematch

By Scott Gilfoid: Alright, here’s the deal: I’ve seen the Tyson Fury vs. John McDermott fight and I think there’s no case for a rematch. All these McDermott fans are crying over spilled milk and I really wish they would shut their traps already and get over the fact that McDermott lost the fight. Deal with it, take the pain. Things like this happen in boxing. McDermott lost and that’s how it is. In my view, McDermott doesn’t deserve a rematch and if I’m Fury’s management I’d tell him to go fly a kite and forget about a rematch, that is, unless they want to shower Fury with cash to fight Big boy McDermott again.

Short of that, I’d tell them to take a hike and try to learn from the defeat. McDermott could have won the fight, but he didn’t. That’s just the way it goes sometimes. But I’m sick of all the crying and bellyaching from the fans of McDermott. I know it hurts, but that’s the way it is.

Your big boy lost because he failed to work hard in many of the rounds in the fight. Over here in the U.S., we don’t reward fighters for landing only three good shots per round, unless those punches end with a knockdown. If a fighter is getting drilled in the mug as much as McDermott was in the fight, the logical outcome is that he’s going to lose the fight. If McDermott wanted to win the fight, he should have either tried to block the punches with his gloves or at least ducked them rather than letting them connect to his face.

McDermott was a punching bag with gloves on Saturday night and was out-punched at least eight to one in every round, possibly more from what I saw. You can’t give big boy McDermott the decision when all he was doing was landing a few hard shots in the first minute of action and then basically trying to smother Fury on the inside. It was bad to watch what McDermott was doing.

I admit he would look good in the first minute of virtually every round, but then he’d turn into an old man in the next rounds, just trying to mug Fury like he was reaching for his walker. In the meantime, Fury would be drilling him with jabs and short punches with both hands.

Those few punches that the wide body McDermott would land early in the round would be long forgotten by the time that the round would end because Fury was landing so many shots. The final coup de grace came in the last two rounds when McDermott twice turned his back on Fury and scurried away to try and avoid getting hit. What was that? That’s like something I’d see on YouTube with an amateur heading for the hills while being pursued by another fighter trying to take his head off. If the fight had been close at that point, and for me it wasn’t because Fury was in control, then there’s no way that I could give those rounds to big boy McDermott.

So unless they waive a lot of cash in front of Fury’s snoot, he should tell them forget it. I already beat McDermott, so why should I beat him again? It’ll be the same thing. Fury will work hard in every round doing most of the hard work, whereas McDermott will land his three good punches and spend the rest of the time trying to mug on the inside. Who wants to see that? I don’t.

That was ugly boxing on McDermott’s part. But, yeah, he lost the fight and doesn’t deserve a rematch as far as I’m concerned. You Brits need to stop crying, man up and put a sock in it already. McDermott lost fair and square. Referee Terry O’Conner made his decision and I agree with it.
