fury34234By Steven Wain: Today the British Boxing Board of Control has ordered a rematch between Tyson Fury and John McDermott; it comes after referee Terry O’Connor controversially gave Fury a 98-92 victory in their English Heavyweight Title clash.

The BBBofC said that they accept that the decision was controversial and have ordered the rematch to take place before the end of this year. This from their official website reads;

“The Board has decided that because the outcome of the contest was controversial it will order a rematch, purse bids are therefore called in short terms to be submitted to the Board by 12.00.noon, Wednesday, 14th October 2009, the contest to take place by the end of December 2009.”

Although they do admit the result was controversial they said that referee Terry O’Connor will remain a class A referee,

“The Board listened carefully to Mr. O’Connor’s explanation and

* in the light of the explanation; and
* his record, ability and experience

the Board has decided to allow him to continue as a Class A Star Referee.”

Well this must be a positive outcome for both McDermott and Fury. McDermott because he gets a chance to change the result of the fight and get his title back, and, Fury because he gets another chance to prove himself, and improve on his some what poor performance last time around.

A rematch for this fight was certain, BBBofC have done the correct thing, after all it is not fair on big M, he’s already been robbed by Williams once and possibly twice.

If the first fight between these two is anything to go by, I for one can’t wait for the rematch!
