Donaire vs. Conception this Saturday Night – News

By David Lahr: Former International Boxing Federation flyweight champion Nonito Donaire (21-1, 14 KO’s) will be moving up in weight this Saturday night to fight slugger Rafael Conception (13-3-1, 8 KO’s) for the interim WBA super flyweight title at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The WBA is passing out super flyweight titles like it’s candy.

There already is two champions in Vic Darchinyan and Noubu Nashiro, and with the winner of Donaire and Conception, there would now be three. No wonder the UFC is making in roads against boxing. This is pretty silly. Donaire, 26, is moving up in weight because it’s too hard on his body to continue to melt down to 112 and by moving up to 115, it will be a little easier on his body.

However, Donaire doesn’t plan on sticking around too long at super flyweight, because he plans to keep on winning titles one division at a time until he eventually gets to the super featherweight or lightweight divisions. If all goes well by then, Donaire could possibly have captured an incredible seven world titles in seven different weight classes, something that Manny Pacquiao is trying to accomplish by fighting a catch weight bout against WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto.

However, Donaire likely won’t be forcing his opponents to fight at a handicap, because he plans on fighting at the full weight class of every division, unlike Pacquiao who has become somewhat dependent on them as he’s moved up in weight the past year.

Donaire probably shouldn’t have too many problems against Conception on Saturday night. Conception is a decent fighter from Panama, who likes to slug it out with his opponents. He was getting dominated by Filipino AJ Banal last year when Conception came on to score a come from behind knockout in the 10th round.

Conception’s success didn’t last long unfortunately. He was stopped in his very next bout in the 9th round by Jorge Arce in September 2008. Conception got in a war with Arce and was unable to stand to the pace and the power of Arce’s shots. Conception has rebounded from that loss to get wins over Emerson Nisperusa and Kermin Guardia.

For his part, Donaire scored a shocking 5th round knockout victory over Vic Darchinyan in July 2007 to capture the IBF flyweight title. Donaire was hoping that Darchinyan would want to fight him in a rematch so that he could get another good payday. However, Darchinyan’s promoter has been reluctant to put Darchinyan back in with Donaire for obvious reasons.

Donaire dominated Darchinyan in that fight, catching him repeatedly with right hooks as Darchinyan would rush forward trying to land. Donaire has been without a big named opponent to fight while holding down the IBF flyweight title.

Donaire defeated Luis Maldonado, Moruti Mthalane and most recently Raul Martinez, easily beating all three in stoppage victories. However, beyond the champions Daisuke Naito, Denkaosan Kaowichit and Omar Narvaez, there’s few interesting fighters for Donaire to fight in the flyweight division.
