Why Is Pacquiao Being Bullied?

pac956By Mike Burnell: The rumors continue to swirl in the boxing world about Pac v Cotto, Pac v Mosley, Pac v Cintron, Pac v Foreman, Pac v Ali, Pac v Marciano, maybe Archie Moore…Round and round they go and who Pac fights, so far, nobody knows. Everyone wants a piece of him.

Manny Pacquiao is factually a smaller man fighting at a jaw dropping level, in more ways than one. He has clawed and fought his way from early defeats to the top of the theoretical pound for pound championship ladder and firmly established himself as the man to beat.

There are those that will dismiss challengers of the Filipino destroyer as ‘picking on the little guy’. It has come to the attention of knowledgeable observers of The Sweet Science that this “little guy” isn’t too worried about the bullies. Beginning at 106 pounds and constantly fighting his way up he has a career of besting the big man and proving the “a good big man always beats a good little man” is nothing more than an old saying; a saying that is generally historically correct, further punctuating Pac’s achievements.

To say Cotto, Mosley, Mayweather or anyone else at 147 is going after Pac because he is the smaller man is shortsighted and smacks of bias. Manny is the biggest star in the sport, will be competitive with any welterweight and has proven that point emphatically.

While Manny has put himself in the drivers seat the return of Floyd Mayweather can not be ignored. The ultimate goal of any welterweight today is clear, Mayweather. In today’s landscape, however, all roads run through Pacquiao. Floyd Mayweather is not inclined to meet any of the current crop of welterweight monsters without a huge upside.

Floyd “Money” Mayweather is not an attainable fight without “Money.” The point is that whoever fights Manny makes huge money. Whoever defeats Manny sets himself up for a Mayweather bout on PPV for a probable record setting bonanza. This is where legacies and career defining efforts will be forged.

Mosley, Cotto, Williams, Cintron et al…see the writing on the wall and this is exactly why they are all patiently waiting in a line that would rival any soup kitchen in the country just for a chance to pick on the little guy.

What a bunch of bullies…
