Henry overwhelms George

By Jim Dower: After getting off to a good start in the 1st round against light heavyweight contender Chris Henry (24-2, 19 KO‘s), in which he hurt Henry with a big right hand, Shaun George (18-3-2, 9 KO’s) seemed to have a breakdown of sorts for the rest of the way, growing immediately passive until being taken out in the 6th round.

George, 30, ended getting knocked down twice in the 6th round and taken out by Henry. In seeing the first round, it’s almost unbelievable that George had a breakdown like he did. He was doing incredibly well in the opening round, using his faster hands and strong right to punish the wide open and defensively limited Henry with huge shots.

In the middle of the round, George staggered Henry with a big right hand and looked to be in position to finish him off before long. However, Henry, ranked #9 in the World Boxing Council and #11 in the IBF, was able to survive the round without going down somehow.

He got hit with some shots that would have dropped many other light heavyweights with a lesser chin. In the 2nd round, it was all Henry, hitting George with one big right hand after another and totally dominating the fight without too many problems.

George was now throwing nothing and had a scared look in his eyes as if he wasn’t sure what to think of Henry. George didn’t seem hurt or even close to being hurt, but rather just kind of out of it and not fighting with any aggression all of a sudden.

In the meantime, Henry seemed to be going after George with glee, winding up with big chopping right hands and loading up with every shot as he literally chased George around the ring trying to take his head off.

Henry has good power, but not the kind that would instill fear in an opponent. However, in order to beat a fighter like Henry, you have to fight him hard and match him punch for punch to get a win. This is what both Adrian Diaconu and Yusef Mack did in getting wins over Henry.

However, both of them had no problem standing in and trading big shots for 12 full rounds; George, however, looked like the last thing he wanted to do was to trade power shots with Henry and stayed on the move for the most part in rounds two through six.

At the end of the 3rd round, Henry hurt George with a big right hand to the head. George was making a mistake of letting Henry in too close by not throwing enough jabs and not moving enough. By the 4th and 5th rounds, George was throwing next to nothing back at Henry and mostly just taking big shots from him. In the 5th, Henry tagged George with a big right hand that knocked George back a good foot of so before he was able to stop his momentum.

Although it was still early in the fight, George looked defeated already and not into the fight. Early in the 6th round, Henry tagged George with a big right hand that staggered him and sent him down. George then got up looking hurt and continued fighting. Henry then landed three more right hands to send George down for the final second and final time in the round. Referee Steve Smoger than immediately stopped the bout at 1:08 of the round.
