gavin3443By Nate Anderson: Undefeated light welterweight prospect Frankie Gavin (3-0, 3 KO’s) stopped Graham Fearn (4-3, 1 KO’s) in the 2nd round on Saturday night at the M.E.N. Arena, in Manchester, England. Gavin, 23, dropped Fearn twice in the fight. After the second knockdown, a left-right combination to the head, referee Steve Gray stepped in and halted the bout at 2:25 of the 2nd round.

Gavin looked really good in the opening round, working behind a steady jab and rarely getting hit by Fearn. Later on in the round, Gavin began to throw a lot of lead left hands, catching Fearn flush with each shot. The punches had a lot of power in them and made a crashing sound each time they landed to the face of Fearn.

Gavin then went back to his jab and boxed beautifully for the remainder of the round. As the round was ending, Gavin landed a nice right-left combination to the head of Fearn. In the 2nd round, Gavin began throwing more left hands and hit Fearn with a lot of huge shots in the opening minute of the round. To his credit, Fearn wasn’t afraid and urged Gavin to keep pouring it on.

Pour it on Gavin did as he dropped Fearn seconds later with a tremendous right hand hook to the midsection. Fearn wasn’t expecting the shot and went down like a ton of bricks. He got up and was almost immediately assaulted by a series of hard body shots from Gavin, who tried hard to repeat the knockdown.

However, Fearn stayed on his feet for a little while longer until getting hammered with a quick right-left combination that put Fearn down. He immediately got up, but referee Steve Gray decided Fearn had enough and decided to stop the fight at 2:25 of the round.

In other action on the card, unbeaten British super middleweight prospect Billy Joe Saunders (3-0, 3 KO’s) stopped journeyman Matt Scriven (13-53, 1 KO’s) in the 2nd round of a scheduled four round bout. Scriven, 35, came into the fight sporting a 35 fight consecutive losing streak dating back two years. Saunders, a 2008 Olympian for Britain, tore into the journeyman after at the opening bell, loading up with every punch and tagging him with hard body shots and hooks to the head.

Saunders was throwing really hard and each body shot were thrown with tremendous power. However, if nothing else, Scriven showed a great chin and took Saunders’s big shots without showing any signs of being hurt. Near the end of the round, Saunders caught Scriven up against the ropes and landed six huge punches to the head and body.

Scriven took the shots but he was taking terrible punishment and not throwing anything back at Saunders. Scriven’s nose was bleeding early in the round, but it was taken care of by his corner help in between rounds.

In the 2nd round, Saunders cornered Scriven a number of times, and gave him serious punishment while having him trapped there. Referee Phil Edwards stepped in suddenly and halted the fight at 1:21 after Saunders got Scriven up against the ropes yet again and was hammering him until the referee stepped in and halted the fight in the 2nd.

Saunders looked really good, better than fellow pro prospects Gavin and James DeGale.
