Who is the Best Boxer of All Time?

robinson757322By Liam Santiago: Over the years many world class boxers have come and gone. Some have stayed at the top for over a decade, while others with the same talents have stayed for under a year. But who is the greatest fighter to ever live?

Muhammed Ali has to be up there. Amazing speed and footwork, so much so that at heavyweight he more or less resembled a lightweight. Not only did he have the talent, he brought a new face to boxing, especially the heavyweight division. He set a standard which, in the heavyweight division, has never been matched and quite possibly never will.

Sugar Ray Robinson (173-19-6, 108ko’s), has to be in the top three. To go 95 fights unbeaten is an amazing achievment which will never be matched in this day and age. His first loss came to Jake LaMotta, who arguably also one the best ever fighters, known for displaying an amazingly granite chin, huge knockout power and good ability. Robinson also lost to Britain’s Randolph Turpin the first time they fought.

The Lemington boxer beat Robinson convincingly, however, the rematch, which Robinson won, was much more unconvincing. Turpin also has to be rated as one of the best, he had a huge heart, huge power and he could box amazingly.

In my opinion, however, the best boxer of all time has to be the one and only Panamanian legend, Roberto Duran. Duran took boxing to another level, he set a new standard. His aggressive style and ferocious power made him very hard to deal with. Not only was he extremely talented, he was one of the most exiting fighters to watch. In his prime there was not, and has not been since, a single fighter who could match him. He twice defeated Buchanan who famously beat Panamanian legend Laguna, who was Duran’s idol.

Close behind Duran, it has to be Randy Turpin and third, Ray Robinson.
