Is Cintron The Most Hated Fighter In Boxing?

cintron23442By Manuel Perez: With the dust still settling out from the deeply controversial 12-round majority draw between Kermit Cintron and Sergio Martinez on Saturday night, a fight in which Cintron appeared for all practical purposes counted out in the 7th after running into a hard left hand from Martinez, only to be allowed to continue fighting after arguing his case with the referee while still down.

Cintron got up at what appeared to be 10, and then went nuts telling the referee that he had been head butted by Martinez and not knocked down from a punch. Thankfully, it didn’t fly with the referee nor has it been bought by the boxing fans that’ve seen it replayed in slow motion. By now, Cintron has seen it too I imagine.

The complaining was off putting, making Cintron look like a complainer in my eyes and in the eyes of many people judging from the comments in internet boxing forums. What went perfectly with this incident in terms of poor taste was the scoring of the fight by the judges, with two of them scoring it an identical 113-113.

Now, that’s not Cintron’s fault but he made it worse by not fighting hard in the last round, as if he had the fight in the bag. How he would find it in himself to run in the 12th round, I have no idea. If it were me, I would have known that things were disparate, that I was hopelessly behind and that I needed a knockout to win. I guess he knew something I didn’t.

To top it off, Cintron got up on the ring ropes after the fight and had the gall to wiggle his backside as if he was happy with his performance. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t be happy with getting a draw, especially if I was a world class fighter.

A draw in that case would piss me off to no end, though I wouldn’t be made at the judges about it. I’d be mad at myself for not fighting well enough to get the win. He looked cocky when he was waggling his backside, like he had won something rather than been given a gift by being allowed to continue fighting when he very well should have been counted out in the 7th.

Many boxing fans are as upset as I am with the decision, and with Cintron for bitching and whining about the punch that he was hit with, calling it a head butt.
