Angulo Stops Rivera In 5

angulo552211By Sam Gregory: The opening bout for tonight’s HBO Boxing After Dark saw Mexico’s Cosme Rivera coming into this fight with a record of 31-11 with 22 KO’s. His opponent was the undefeated Jr middleweight Alfredo Angulo with a perfect record of 14 wins and no loses, 11 of those wins coming by way of knockout.

In the first round of the scheduled ten rounder, Angulo suffered a cut over his right eye; referee Telis Assimenios informed ringside commentators the cut was from an accidental clash of heads. Rivera who took this fight on four days notice took a beating in rounds 2 and 3. The hard hitting Angulo landed 51 percent of his power shots in the third round according to Compubox. The unofficial ringside scorer gave Angulo a 10-8 3rd round because of how one-sided the round went.

Rivera took a pounding again in the fourth round. In the 3rd and 4th rounds Rivera was out-landed 103-24with punches. At the end of the fourth round Rivera’s corner asked his what was wrong; Riviera admitted he was tired.

The fifth round was more of the same one-sided pounding for Rivera. The athletic commission along with referee Telis Assimenios stepped in and called a halt to the bout 2:38 seconds of the fifth round.

Alfredo Angulo improved his perfect record to 15 wins with 12 KO’s and no defeats. Cosme Rivera fell to 31 wins and 12 loses, 22 of his wins by KO. Rivera was stopped 2 times himself.
