lomachenko42.jpgBy Erik Schmidt: For the first time in ages, this year’s Olympics failed to unveil a large amount of potential future professional champions. In fact, it seems that in some of the cases due to crazy hand-held electronic scoring devices of the judges, the top fighter didn’t always make it into the finals of the Olympic tourney.

There were, however, a few fighters from Ukraine and Russia that really impressed, such as two-time Olympic Gold medal winner Russian lightweight Alexey Tishchenko, Ukrainian featherweight Vasyl Lomachenko and Russian heavyweight Rakhim Chakhkiev. Lomachenko appeared to be easily the best fighter in the entire Olympics, as he breezed through his competition with ease and scored a 1st round stoppage in his gold medal match against Khedafi Djelkhir. Italian super heavyweight Roberto Cammarelle also looked good, scoring a 4th round stoppage over Zhilei Zhang from China, although Cammarelle, 28, probably doesn’t have the size or the age to make it as a professional.

LIGHT FLYWEIGHT – Shiming Zou vs. Serdamba Purevdorj

This was a fight that many Chinese had been looking forward to as their star Shiming Zou was going up against Mongolian Serdamba Purevdorj. However, the bout ended unexpectedly in the 2nd round when Purevdorj injured his right shoulder and couldn’t continue. The fight was stopped at 19 seconds into the 2nd round. The injury appeared to occur at the end of the 1st round, which prevented Purevdorj from holding his right arm up. Gamely, he came out for the second round with his right arm hanging limply by his side. His corner, however, seeing him in distress, threw in the towel and the fight was quickly stopped by the referee. The only score in the fight was one point by Zou on a right hand punch that didn’t appear to land. As such, Zou didn’t prove to be the better fighter in the match and essentially won by default.

Result: Zou wins after fight stopped in 2nd round due to injury to Purevdorj

FLYWEIGHT – Andres Laffita-Hernandez vs. Somjit Jongjohor

Somjit Jongjohor from Thailand toyed with Cuban Laffita-Hernandez, beating him by an easy 8-2 victory. After piling up an 8-1 lead through three rounds, Jongjohor essentially played keep away in the final round to win the gold medal. The fight was dull, however, because Jongjohor was so much better than his opponent.

Results: Jongjohor wins 8-2

BANTAMWEIGHT – Yankiel Leon Alarcon vs. Badar-Uugan Enkhbat

Bantamweight Badar-Uugan Enkhbat from Mongolia, proved to be too quick and elusive for his opponent Yankiel Leon Alarcon from Cuba, defeating him soundly by a one-sided 16-5 score. Enkhbat looked a lot like a young Pernell Whitaker, fighting with his hands held low, dodging and countering his much less skilled Cuban opponent with ease. Enkhbat building up a 4-1 lead in the 1st round using single shots to the head. Alarcon continuously came rushing forward trying to catch Enkhbat with a big shot but more often than not, he would wind up punching only air as Enkhbat would dodge him, making him miss. The Cuban had a good second round, scoring with right hands and bringing the score to 8-5.

However, Enkhbat would then pull away in the third round as he hit Alarcon with beautiful lefts and rights to end the round ahead by a score of 12-5. In the 4th round, Alarcon, now hopelessly behind, disparately attempted to score a knockout. However, this left him open to numerous counter shots by Enkhbat, who piled on four more points to end the bout winning the gold medal by a lopsided 16-5 score.

Result:Badar-Uugan Enkhbat wins 16-5
