He has been taking part in a few radio interviews and while speaking to ‘The South Wales Argus’ shortly after Kelly Pavlik’s fantastic destruction of his fellow countrymen Gary Lockett had a few interesting things to say.

Calzaghe first talked about Lockett’s disappointing loss the undefeated American middleweight champion, Kelly ‘The Ghost’ Pavlik.

“ Gary couldn’t execute his strategy. Pavlik was too aggressive and strong for him. I’ve got to say that I love watching this kid fight, he’s entirely forward thinking – retreating and holding just don’t come into his mind”

“ Kelly is a breath of fresh air for American boxing and they desperately need a guy like him and I think he’s got a big future “

There has been a lot of talk about Joe fighting Kelly and all of us Boxing Aficionado’s would love to see that fight. However Joe stated “ At this point in time, I think its unlikely to happen “

Calzaghe indicated that talks are ongoing for him to face former 4 weight world champion Roy Jones Junior, another legend of the ring and slam dunk Hall of Famer. Calzaghe believes that the Jones Junior is a fight that can be made but said “ I am not sure Pavlik really wants to face me at the moment. He would have little to gain because I believe I would beat him for sure, with respect to Gary Lockett I would be a step-up too far for Kelly”

“ He’s got the world at this feet at middleweight or super middleweight and will want to extend his unbeaten record, rather than step up at least one weight category to face me “

Calzaghe went on to say that it was not beyond the realms of possibility that they could face each other, but that a Roy Jones fight was the right fight for him at the moment.

While a lot of boxing fans may be disappointed that this match up is not immediately on the cards for both fighters Calzaghe did make some interesting points. Is Kelly Pavlik really ready for the likes of Joe Calzaghe? And assuming they did fight at a later date in 2009 would Calzaghe be then a little over the hill by then or is he already and would a Roy Jones Junior fight REALLY be that attractive for the fans? What do you think?

Either way, Joe Calzaghe / Kelly Pavlik is a fight we all want to see, sooner rather than later.
