Calzaghe vs. Hopkins – “The Deals Done” – Warren

In the latest boxing news, the bout between Joe Calzaghe and Bernard Hopkins appears to be completed according to the BBC. Calzaghe’s promoter, Frank Warren had this to say about the fight, “The deal’s done and will be confirmed with the venue and date next week.” The fight will most likely be taking place in Las Vegas, in April. Though the fight is being called a super fight, it’s mainly being called that by British fans, as the American’s don’t see Hopkins as the top fighter in the light heavyweight division, as Chad Dawson fits that category, hence this is just another fight to many fans.

As is his custom, Hopkins, 42, is working on upsetting Calzaghe, talking a lot of trash, hoping that it will put Calzaghe off his game. In the past, Hopkins used this strategy to beat fighters such as Felix Trinidad and Antonio Tarver, to name just a couple, but in this case it’s likely not to work. Hopkins is too old, too limited and without enough offensive skills to beat Calzaghe and has almost zero chance at winning.

His talk may sell a few more tickets to fans that find that kind of trash talking appealing but for people who see it for what it is, they’ll not be swayed by it. In the end, it will be an old fading fighter against an undefeated champion with much superior offensive skills and in the end, I don’t see Hopkins winning one round of the fight. He won’t be able to punch and clinch his way to victory like he did against the jabber Winky Wright or against the old and faded Tarver.
