Calzaghe Hopkins: Will Bernard Be An Obstacle To Making This Fight Happen?

According to the BBC, Joe Calzaghe’s promter FranK Warren believes that a future bout with Bernard Hopkins may be a problem, mainly because Hopkins might be afraid to lose to Calzaghe and would make negotiations difficult. To be sure, Hopkins, 42, has always been tough to negotiate contractors with, especially late in his career. Hopkins also wants the fight with Calzaghe to take place in the United States, no doubt not wanting to go to England where he would likely be fighting in front of 50,000 screaming fans, all wanting Hopkins’ blood.

However, for the bout to take place in America, it would have to be in a large arena otherwise it would cut down on the overall amount of money that can be made from the fight. Again, this is another sticking point, since Calzaghe and Warren would much prefer to have the fight in England because of the more money that can be made on the fight. Hopkins, at this point, doesn’t have a lot of other options for future big-name opponents besides Calzaghe.

To be sure, Hopkins could fight a rematch with Winky Wright. However, their first fight was far from a crowd pleaser, and it’s questionable how many fans would be interested in paying to see this fight.
