vazquez_wilfredo4.jpgFeatherweight Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (8-0, 7 KOs) – the son of former super bantamweight/featherweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez – TKO’d Benjamin Orozco (3-3, 2 KOs) in the third round on Friday night at the Kissimmee Civic Center, in Kissimmee, Florida. After a fairly even first round in which both fighters did substantial damage to each other with head and body shots, Vazquez hurt Orozco with a left hook late in the 2nd round. Orozco, 22, though was able to make it out of the round without going down – barely. However, in the 3rd round, Vazquez quickly moved forward and blasted Orozco out of there with a flurry of right hooks. Orozco remained standing, however, but was out on his feet when the referee stepped in and stopped it at 0:46 of the 3rd round.

In the first round, Vazquez showed an excellent left hook early on, landing it hard and getting Orozco’s attention with it.

Orozco, though, showed no fear and tried to come forward to get in close to land body shots. He was much more comfortable with fighting at close range than Vazquez, who mainly wanted to stay on the outside where he could bomb away with his hooks and avoid Orozco’s big body shots. orozco landed a flurry of shots jut before the round ended, enough for me to give the round to him.

In the 2nd round, Orozco continued with his excelletn work that he ended the first round, as he landed ripping hooks, first to the body and then to the head of Vazquez, who by then was starting to look uncomfortable with Orozco’s constant pressure. However, with the round nearly over, Vazquez suddenly hurt Orozco with a mean looking 1-2 combination, staggering him and causing him to stop throwing punches completely. Vazquez came on like a bolt and pounded him with a blizzard of punches before the round ended. If not for the bell, it was doubtful that Orozco would have made it out of the round, for he was out on his feet from the numerous shots he was hit with in the last 20 seconds of the round.

In the 3rd round, Vazquez flew out of his corner like a lightening rod, going right after Orozco with a devastating two-fisted attack. Briefly, Orozco tried to land a couple of shots, perhaps hoping to slow Vazquez down for a second or two, but it was no use, as Vazquez landed a flurry of punches which drove Orozco from one side of the ring to the other, taking shots the whole time. Orozco was hurt with another right hand, staggering him, and sending him stumbling backwards. Vazquez then calmly strode up to him and cracked him with four right hooks in a row to the head of the now defenseless Orozco. The ref Frank Gentile then intervened, stepping between them and stopped the bout at 0:46 of the 3rd round.
