wilder2By Scott Gilfoid: U.S boxing fans could be in for a treat on January 19th, as the 10 round fight between Deontay Wilder (26-0, 26 KO’s) and Matt “Gator” Greer (15-8, 13 KO’s) may be televised in the United States on Fox Espanol from the Centro de Convenciones, Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico. It’s still too early to tell right now but that would be great for American fans to be able to see the 27-year-old Wilder in action in this fight.

This is merely a stay busy fight and nothing really special. Golden Boy Promotions had a spot for one of their cards in Mexico, and Wilder was asked on short notice if he was interested in taking the fight and of course he said yes. Wilder wants to fight as often as possible against whoever he can get in the ring. If there’s none of the big names available to fight him then he’s fine with taking on a lesser fighter to stay sharp.

Greer, 35, may not have a great record or any significant wins, but I rate him as being as good as the guys that Tyson Fury and David Price have been fighting lately. I think Greer is as good as Audley Harrison, Matt Skelton and Tony Thompson. Those are some of Price’s opponents. I also think Greer is better than Martin Rogan, one of Fury’s recent opponents.

Don’t worry, Wilder is going to be stepping it up this year against the cream of the heavyweight division and I expect him to be beating on the door of the Klitschkos by December looking to get a title shot. He’s ready and he’s got the power to beat anyone in the heavyweight division.

Sure, Wilder is a little raw but he’s one of those fighters that can look bad for a round or two, but as soon as he lands that big right hand it’s over. He’s got that equalizer that makes up for his flaws. I rate Wilder’s right hand power as being the best in the heavyweight division, and his 26 knockouts in 26 fights attests to that.
