Image: Price-Fury bout a possibility after allBy Scott Gilfoid: A fight between David Price and British heavyweight champion Tyson Fury is a possibility, as purse the purse bids were expected to be lodged today. Price is the mandatory challenger after beating John McDermott by a 1st round TKO last month. Fury was thought to be vacating his British title in order to avoid having to take the risky fight against Price. Fury also had the Commonwealth heavyweight title and is expected to get a world title shot in 2012 or early 2013 against one of the Klitschko brothers.

A loss to Price would foil those plans. Price, 28, even if he were to beat Fury, likely wouldn’t rush into a fight against one of the Klitschkos because Price still has a lot of flaws in his game that he needs to fix before he faces the Klitschkos or other top world level opposition. Fury is less of a threat than some of the top contenders due to Fury’s lack of power and basic fundamentals boxing skills.

Price’s promoter Frank Maloney made an offer to Fury last week for a fight in April or May. However, Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessey made a counter offer that Maloney is still looking over. If Maloney fails to agree to the offer, then it will go to purse bids on Wednesday with the BBBofC.

Price is currently scheduled to fight a little known fighter by the name of Josue Blocus on March 24th on the undercard of the Tye Fields vs. Mariusz Wach card in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It’s a poor fight card to be on for Price if his idea was to get noticed by the American public because this fight won’t be carried by HBO or Showtime cable television.

The Price-Fury fight will make one of these fighters a big player in the heavyweight division. But it still doesn’t mean they’ll be future champions because there are a number of other heavyweights that have either better skills or better chins than these guys.

What we could be seeing is the winner of this fight being an Alexander Dimitrenko type of heavyweight. In other words, a big guy that hangs around the top 10 but never fights for a world title due to struggles in beating other contenders.
