ortiz2By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz’s career may be over after he was shockingly knocked out in the 2nd round on Thurday night by Luis Collazo (35-5, 18 KO’s) at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Late in the 2nd round, Ortiz (29-5-2, 22 KO’s) landed a left hook that was countered by Collazo with a big right hook that badly stunned Ortiz, causing him to turn around and bend over. Collazo then nailed Ortiz with a grazing left hook and another right hand to the head that put Ortiz down on the canvas. He was then countered out at 2:59 of the round.

Ortiz was way too urgent in the fight and was pushing the pace too quickly given the long layoff he’s had from the sport.

In the last 10 seconds of the round, Ortiz tried to load up with some big shots, and that made him vulnerable for Collazo’s big right hook to the head in the last seconds.

After the fight, Collazo said “I want Floyd [Mayweather] here in New York. I want what the fans want.”

I somehow doubt that there’s a huge fan cry for Mayweather vs. Collazo fight, even with him knocking an arguably over-the-hill Ortiz out in the 1st round.

I think I speak for a lot of people in saying that I think it’s time for Ortiz to hang up the gloves. He needs to go into acting or whatever. He’s clearly not going to be able to rebuild his career off of three straight defeats. The curtain is closing on his career at this point. If Ortiz can’t even beat a less than stellar fighter like Collazo, then he needs to retire and move on in another direction. If Ortiz was smart with the money he got for his fight with Mayweather then he should be able to live the rest of his life with it. Of course, if he blew it all then he’s going to need to do go to school and get a job like normal people.

In a poor mismatch, unbeaten featherweight contender Gary Russell Jr. (24-0, 14 KO’s) stopped Miguel Tamayo (14-8-2, 12 KO’s) in the 4th round. Russell Jr. dropped Tamayo with a right to the head in the 4th, and he stayed down for the full count. Russell Jr. was nailing Tamayo at will during the fight, and was a really one-sided fight that made you wonder why the match was made in the first place. Russell Jr. should be fighting much better opposition than the likes of Tamayo at this point in his career.

Other action on the card:

Emanuel Gonzalez UD 8 Victor Sanchez
Marcus Browne UD 6 Kentrell Claiborne
Zachary Ochoa UD 4 Jose Valderrama
