maidana2By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KO’s) beat Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe to the punch on Monday in leaking the news to the media that he’ll be facing Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) on September 13th. But the official announcement for the fight should take place this week within the next few days, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

The negotiations for the rematch are still being worked on, but hopefully the fight should be announced shortly. If Mayweather wants the fight, it’s going to get done, and he clearly wants to fight Maidana again in order to show to the boxing world that he can fight a lot better than he did last May when he struggled to beat him by a 12 round majority decision.

“Still in the talks. Nothing confirmed on our side,” Maidana’s manager Sebastian Contursi told Dan Rafael at ESPN. “Hopefully, we’ll have a decision made in the next 4-5 days.”

If this fight is going to hit 1 million pay-per-view buys or better, Mayweather is going to need to make sure that he adds a good undercard of competitive fights on it, because the undercard that he had on his last PPV card last May was a disappointment. Golden Boy Promotions had Adrien Broner and Amir Khan on the undercard in mismatches.

Khan fought an aging fighter from the past in Luis Collazo, while Broner fought a small former lightweight in Carlos Molina. Neither fight was competitive, nor did neither of the fights attract much interest going into the card. What Mayweather needs is 1-2 big names on the undercard fighting in good competitive fights that fans are interested in seeing.

Mayweather had a lot of problems against Maidana due in part to his decision to slug with him. Some boxing fans feel that Mayweather had no choice but to mix it up with Maidana because of the way he cut off the ring in the fight. It’s hard to say whether Mayweather purposefully took it easy on Maidana or if he was forced to fight him because of his ability to cut off the ring.

We’re going to find out on September 13th if Mayweather has lost something or not, because if he struggles again then you’ve got to assume that it’s age that is starting to show itself with Mayweather.
