Mayweather-Canelo 11-city media tour to start on June 24th in New York

mayweather534By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions will be staring the Floyd Mayweather Jr. – Saul “Canelo” Alvarez media tour starting on June 24th in New York City, says Dan Rafael. Mayweather and Canelo will hit the following cities as part of their media tour: New York, Washington, DC, Atlanta, Georgia, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Chicago, Illinois, Miami, Florida, San Antonio, Texas, Houston, Texas, Phoenix, Arizona, Los Angeles, California, Mexico City, Mexico.

It is interesting that the 11-city Mayweather-Canelo tour will be hitting two cities in Texas rather than just one like in the other states. Golden Boy might be looking to take advantage of the huge Mexican population in Texas to drum up as much interest as possible in that fight.

This is the biggest fight tour that the 36-year-old Mayweather has been involved in, even though the fight itself likely won’t get anywhere near the all-time pay per view record set by Mayweather against Oscar De La Hoya in 2007 in drawing 2.4 million buys. The Mayweather-Canelo fight will likely bring in around 1.5 million buys at best because it’s still too soon for the fight due to Canelo being an unknown with casual boxing fans. He’s only well-known amount the hardcore fans.

Golden Boy and Canelo are rushing the fight, but they have little choice because Mayweather will likely be retiring at the end of his 6-fight contract with Showtime/CBS. It’s too bad because if Canelo were to have at least three more years under his belt – and if he were to fight junior middleweights instead of welterweights – he might be better known, but right now he’s still an obscure fighter in the eyes of casual boxing fans.

The Showtime All Access specials and the commercial advertisements will help some in that area, but enough to make this a 2 million PPV fight or even close to it. Of course, we’ll likely never hear the final PPV totals because it looks like the two promotional companies are going away from releasing the PPV numbers to the boxing public.
