Matthysse-Peterson: Can Lamont take Matthysse’s power shots?

1330By Allan Fox: IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (31-1-1, 16 KO’s) is known for having a really good chin and the kind of body attack that makes him hard to beat. This Saturday night, Peterson’s chin is going to be severely tested by Lucas Matthysse (33-2, 31 KO’s) in a 12 round bout at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The fight will take place at a catchweight of 141 lbs, although it’s likely that both guys will come in lower than that during the weigh-in.

Peterson has a three fight win streak dating back to 2011. During that time he’s beaten Amir Khan by a questionable 12 round split decision and Victor Cayo and Kendall Holt by stoppages. Peterson isn’t really known for his power, but he can wear you down with his body attack and his constant pressure.

He’s someone that you need to have a lot of power to get him to back off or good feet because he’s not going to let up on you. The only fighter that got the better of him was Tim Bradley, who dominated Peterson on the inside with his speed. That was when Bradley was a little faster and he was able to get the better of him that way.

Matthysse isn’t as fast as Bradley and he’s not known for having great inside skills, but he does have really good power. He seems to have gotten stronger in the past year, and that makes him a formidable opponent for Peterson.

Matthysse has knocked out his last five opponents and seems to no longer trust the judges after losing to Zab Judah and Devon Alexander by questionable decisions in 2010 and 2011.

Matthysse has revamped his offense since then and is now a straight ahead fighter that looks to destroy his opponents. Peterson is also a straight ahead fighter, so this should be interesting to see which guy gets taken out because it doesn’t look like this fight will go 12 rounds.
