Image: Mares vs. Moreno: Abner in big test on 11/10By Allan Fox: WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares (24-0-1, 13 KO’s) has a stiff challenge on November 10th against Panamanian Anselmo Moreno (33-1-1, 12 KO’s) in a toss up fight at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California, USA. Moreno, 27, is a champion in his own right but at bantamweight with his WBA Super bantamweight belt.

The only reason that Moreno is moving up in weight for this fight is for the good payday he’ll receive as well as the chance to prove himself better than Mares. There’s not a lot of good opposition at bantamweight for Moreno to fight, which is why he’s taking this fight against Mares at 122.

Moreno has the better boxing skills of the top two and has beaten quality fighters like Nehomar Cermeno, Vic Darchinyan and Wladimir Sidorenko. Moreno’s win over Darchinyan was especially one-sided and very impressive. It was a great fight for Moreno in showing how good he is. In contrast, Mares really struggled to defeat Darchinyan in December of 2010, winning a foul plagued 12 round split decision where Mares probably should have been disqualified due to the constant low blows that he threw in the fight. Moreno didn’t struggle at all in beating Darchinyan and kept it clean, beating him by an easy 12 round decision.

Mares is more of an inside fighter and for him to win this fight he’s going to have to try and force Moreno to fight that kind of fight. It won’t be easy because Moreno likes to move around the ring and use his long arms to jab and land nice shots from the distance. He’s not going to let Mares fight his kind of fight if he can help it.

Also on this stacked card is bantamweight Leo Santa Cruz facing Victor Zaleta, WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly facing an opponent still to be determined, and light middleweight Alfredo Angulo in a comeback fight against Raul Casarez.
