Maidana-Morales 2 would be the same result – Maidana wins

By Scott Gilfoid: There’s really no point in Erik Morales (51-7, 35 KO’s) attempting to fight Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KO’s) one more time hoping he’ll be able to win it next time because Morales doesn’t have the power or the work rate to change the outcome in a second fight.

Believe me, I’d like nothing better than to see the old guy win one for the gipper and come up with a victory to roll back time. I’m all for seeing an old guy on the scrap heap making a comeback, but let’s be real here; Morales can’t fight hard enough in a sustained manner to beat a younger fighter like Maidana.

Morales may not be all that old in terms of years at 34, but those three years where he was retired didn’t help Morales any. He got fat and as you saw last Saturday night, Morales still has some of that flab hanging off his sides. I doubt he’ll get rid of that fat. It looks like it’s here to stay. But maybe worse than the flab is all the wars that Morales has been in. I think that’s probably the number one reason why he’s not the same fighter he once was more so than his sedentary years.

It’s just too hard to overcome all those negatives that Morales has going against him. A rematch would be nothing more than a replay of Maidana all over Morales, hitting him with punch after punch with one or both of Morales’ eyes quickly swelling up to grotesque proportions.

I think Morales would get whipped by virtually all of the top fighters at light welterweight, welterweight and lightweight. Morales may be able to put some punches together for a flurry every and now and then, but he’s not going to beat anyone halfway decent. This is why I see a rematch as a big waste of time for Maidana. He already beat, so why does he need to beat him a second time?
