Khan: Matthysse would be an easy opponent

Image: Khan: Matthysse would be an easy opponentBy William Mackay: Despite coming off of a loss where he looked absolutely horrible in running around the ring to try and avoid the shots from Lamont Peterson, Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) sees light welterweight contender Lucas Matthysse (31-2, 29 KO’s) as easy opponent if they were to ever fight.

Khan told esnewsreport.com “Matthysse is a fighter that is very beatable. He gets hit a lot. I think Matthyse would be an easy opponent.”

That’s funny because I don’t see Matthysse as an opponent that’s easy to hit. He takes some shots, but he blocks a lot of them with his gloves. He’s not easy to hit, and if he’s getting hit, he’s always firing back. You don’t hit Matthysse without him landing back with counter shots to the body and head.

Matthysse is coming off of an easy 5th round stoppage win over Humberto Soto last month. Matthysse was too powerful for Soto and he made it easy by going to the body and wearing him down.

Although Matthysse has a couple of losses on his record in defeats to Zab Judah and Devon Alexander, many boxing fans felt Matthysse deserved to get the win in both of those fights. I agree with them. I felt Matthysse did more than enough to beat Judah and Alexander.

I don’t understand why Khan has never fought Matthysee, because I feel that Matthysse would beat every fighter that Khan has ever fought, including the two guys he lost to. Breidis Prescott would never beat Matthysse even on his best day. The same goes for Peterson.

Matthysse would give Khan a ton of problems with his body punching and pressure. The only way I could see Khan beating Matthysse is if the referee allowed Khan to shove Matthysse around the ring and pull down on his head each time he tried to throw any shots. Matthysse probably can’t beat Khan if he’s fouling but in a clean fight where there’s no shoving and pulling Matthysse down by his head, I see Matthysse knocking Khan out.
