By Kenneth Friedman: Jessie Magdaleno weighed in at 127.9 pounds on Wednesday at the weigh-in for his 10-round fight this Thursday night against Yenifel Vicente for their catchweight match at the Bubble, MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada.  ‘The Lightning’ Vincente came in at 126.5 lbs.

The 28-year-old Magdaleno had to strip down to make weight. We’ll have to see if the weight problems that Magdaleno had will carry over into the fight because he can’t afford to be weakened against a big puncher like Vincente, who is someone that doesn’t struggle to make weight.

It’s not a good sign for Magdaleno that he’s already having weight issues after having moved up to the 126-lb division in 2019.

Before last year, Magdaleno had fought in the 122-pound division from the start of his career in 2010, but it’s now beginning more difficult for him as he approaches 30.

Magdaleno comes into this fight with a two-fight winning steak after losing his WBO 122-pound title to Isaac Dogboe in April 2018.

Vincente will make it tough on Magdaleno

This fight could be more competitive than last Tuesday night’s match between featherweight Shakur Stevenson and Felix Caraballo. That turned out to be a one-sided affair. Vincente, 33, has the power and the talent to give former WBO super bantamweight champion Magdaleno a tough fight.

Magdaleno (27-1, 18 KOs) and Vincente (36-4-2, 28 KOs) are headlining on ESPN & ESPN Deportes at 7:00 p,/ ET/4:00 p.m. PT.

Vincente is coming off of a fourth-round knockout win over Rodolfo Hernandez Montoya last October. In Vincente’s fight before that, he lost a lopsided 10 round unanimous decision to Tramaine Williams (19-0, 6 KOs) in July of last year.

That was a step too far for Vincente, who can be out-boxed at times.  Since 2014, Vincente has won 11 of 12 fights with all the wins coming by knockout.

Other weights on Thursday’s Magdaleno-Vincente card:

  • Adam ‘Bluenose’ Lopez (13-2, 6 KOs) weighed in at 125.8 lbs for his 10 round fight against Louie Coria (12-2, 7 KOs). The 21-year-old Coria weighed in at 124.7 pounds. Lopez and Coria will be fighting for the vacant NABF Featherweight Title. This is the first for 24-year-old Lopez since his seventh-round knockout loss to Oscar Valdez last November in Las Vegas. Lopez knocked Valdez down in round two and gave him a hard fight until the match was abruptly halted in the seventh round by referee Russell Mora. Before that fight, Lopez had won his previous five contests and looked much improved since his eight-round majority decision to Stephen Fulton in 2017.
  • Lightweight prospect Eric Mondragon (3-0, 2 KOs) weighed in at 133 lbs for his four-round fight against Mike Sanchez (6-0, 2 KOs). The 23-year-old Sanchez scaled in at 132.3 pounds for their battle in the 135-lb weight division.
  • Bantamweight Gabriel Muratalla (2-0, 2 KOs) weighed in at 118.3 lbs for his four-round against Texas native Fernando Robles (2-2). Robles weighed in at 118 pounds.
